Yeah it's easy, but takes time away. Idealy you don't want to be shifting right at the finish line. The 3.42's just aren't suited very well to my wifes car now that it has a camshaft.
For best ET and MPH you want to be at or just above your shift points in high gear when you cross the finish.

    110 trap speed doesn't = 420rwhp.

110 mph = 330-350rwhp depending on transmission and dyno.

Tell you the truth, it doesn't change your ETs much at the end of the quarter. I remember a pass that I blew an intercooler piping off at the end of the 1/4 and had to coast through. The ET only was .2 away from the norm. At the end you already have enough forward momentum that your ET isn't going to change drastically. Put some more power on the car so you can use that 4th gear.

In order to use 4th gear the car simply needs more rearend gearing,,,,not more power.
Yes shifting will cost ET and MPH. As my timeslips indicated. I experimented both ways. The car simply needs more rear gear to cross at the top of 4th gear rather than the top of 3rd.

I don't believe forward momentum would be enough to warrant letting off and coasting through the traps for best ET and MPH,,,,or everyone would be doing it.

I'm just saying, if you could ride that gear out without shifting, you wouldn't increase your ET drastically for the reasons I stated. If you can't get to 4th gear, grab some 4.10s. Either that or tap off the rev limiter or raise the shift point in 3rd. Just saying don't expect more than .2 ET change.

.2 ET. Thats what I was saying, optimum ET is what we are all after here.

I tried to ride 3rd gear out, with the rev limiter set at 6,500. It bumps the limiter 3-4 times and killed about 1 mph off the previous slip.
I can use 4th gear for about 200 feet. It's about useless though, for optimum ET that car should be crossing in 4th close to the limiter, which would require 4.10-4.30 gear. But the 3.42's will remain anyway, even with the 12 bolt going in. I like the 1,800 rpm cruise rpm at 80 mph and 28 mpg, and this will be the primary long trip family car.

To the original poster get 4.56 gears, 28" tall m/t et streets on a set of 15" drag rims like my weld pro stars, and drop the clutch around 5000 - 6000 rpms. Also it takes a lot more then just 4xx rwhp to go 11's or even more 10's. It all depends on your setup, weight, and a good driver even more so with a manual shift.
