Widest wheel a 245/45/17 will fit on?
Looking for new wheels soon....
My car came with some hideous aftermarket chrome 17's, I want to replace them. However, the 245/45/17's on them are in great shape.
While I really want a 17x9.5 and 275/40/17 combo, if I can run my current tires on the new wheels, I'll just do that and save some money.
Will the 245's fit on that wide of a wheel safely?
Thanks!

Thanks! That's very good to know. Now I can get my wheels much sooner seeing as I don't need to buy tires too.

Wouldnt the rim be wider than the tread in that combo?

they will work but probably not look very good
245/45/17 work perfect on a 8" wheel. not sure what the 9.5" would look like. post up some pics if you get them

I'm guessing it'd look something like this
Tire stretching looks awful IMO.

they won't be stretched. they are still properly mounted... we're just used to putting the widest tire that is properly mounted.
on a 9", we can put from 245 to 275 and be properly mounted.

If you blow a tire you may be buying a new wheel to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Kind of a moot point now. I've decided I want new tires anyway. I noticed one of them has a small bubble in the sidewall, and I seem to have a balance problem. Not sure if it's the tires or the wheels, but I don't want to take a chance that it's the tires.
Plus, they're only Nankang NS-1's, so they're kind of crappy tires anyway. Although, I'll give them credit for being pretty good in the wet.
