    wider tire on stock WS6

Would there be any disadvantages of putting a 285/40ZR17 Goodyear Eagle GS-D3s on the stock WS6 rim? I know they will fit on the WS6's 9.5" rim. Would the taller side wall give worse handling?

I wouldn't see any issues. They're not much taller than the stock size. Here are some specs for you. (source: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html)

    Stock tire: 275/40/17
    Sidewall: 4.3
    Radius: 12.8
    Diameter: 25.7
    Circumference: 80.6
    Revs/mile: 786.0

    New tire: 285/40/17
    Sidewall: 4.5
    Radius: 13.0
    Diameter: 26.0
    Circumference: 81.6
    Revs/mile: 776.0

I think our stock GM factory rims are 17x9, not 9.5. Maybe someone else can confirm this.

stock wheels are in fact 17x9, not 17x9.5
It's the inside of the rim that defines the width... not the outside measurement.

There is no benifit on getting 285 over 275... the 275 will be mounted slightly better than the 285 and it won't screw up the odometer/speedometer staying with 275s.
You'll get a slightly taller tire and more rotational inertia... and your speedo will be off by a bit over 1% (no biggie).

    but they'll fit no problem.
