    no, i did not have to do any modding or the 'hammer' mod to the inner wheel well. plus it helped that all of the tires were brand new and on the car when i took delivery of her. i pulled the rear off to look and no clearance issues. when i took them off (after they were shot) there were no areas that had any contact made from the tire hitting the wheel well.

    as for how wide, like MRR23 said, check the offset. also ask EGUNIOSS in a PM and he should be able to help you out. i personally think either 285 or 295 for the rear.

    yes it's easy to do with a die grinder. only talking about 1/16"-1/8" at most to grind off the inside hub of the wheel.

    it's going to depend on the offset of the wheel. you might can get away with a 305/30-18. if not, a small spacer (about 5/16" thick) and a big hammer could get you by. at one time, i had 17 x 9.5 american racing 555 wheels with 335/35-17 tires on them. had to do some clearancing of the inner fenderwell to get it to fit without rubbing.
