    Tire questions

Ok, Im not really on here a whole lot, but I have met quite a few of you from other clubs in person.

I was talking to John tonight (JD Z28) and he was giving me some ideas of what to wrap my new rims in when I get them. We decided to just do some cheap like BFG G-Forces in the front and he said To do some NT555 Drag Radials in the back. I dont go to the track a whole lot and the drag radials are pretty cheap so I think Im gonna go with them, but I read that the wear rating for them is a "VR". What is that rating to? 150 MPH? Are they pretty good tires for street driving? I wouldnt be running them at a track since I know they suck at a drag strip.

and FYI, it doesnt rain much in San Diego and when It does, Im usually driving an SUV, so Im not worried about that.

    Thanks guys.

everyone who I know first hand has had them absolutely loved them while on the street and doing the typical road racing and bsing around on city streets but once they hit them at the strip, they said traction went ka-pewp!

Ive got the eagle F1's and those tires are pretty spendy, but stick VERY well on the street. I havent had my car on the track yet but i bet they would work great! also great in the rain.

Ok, well I dont have a very big budget for tires right now as Im doing new rims, cam, headers and a load of other stuff, but my loan wont permit that much for tires hence why Im asking about the Nittos. John knows his stuff and said theyre a good cheap tire that will perform decently on the road. But what is the "VR" soeed rating?

VR is up to 149mph speed rating. That's what my winter snow tires are rated at. It's always good to know I can drive almost 150 in the snow and not blow a tire.

so is a VR a good wear rating then? Like, if anything, I never really race to 150 anyways.

Wear is by the wear rating and VR is the speed rating. The wear rating is a number on the sidewall. Just remember the higher the wear rating the worse the traction they get. Go to thetirerack.com and they have lots of good info on the site.

Thanks Hot Black, I didnt realize what I had typed. I meant to type speed rating. The wear rating is 100 but its alright cause theyre so cheap.

Sorry for posting this in the wrong place Moderators. Didnt scroll down far enough to see the tire/wheel section.

As long as you don't go over the 149 for long you can go past the speed rating if the tires are in good shape and not blow one. The speed rating is a sustained speed and not a peak speed. I've averaged 150mph for 5 minutes on VR rated tires that were about 3 years old and didn't have any problems. With that low of a tread wear you should get good traction. I've seen tires with that low or lower ratings last for quite some time. It all depends on what kind of driving your going to do.
