what is the widest, but safest tire i can put on the rear of my t/a??

16x8? if so I'd say 255/50r16, you might get bigger to fit but it might be at the risk of the sidewall popping off the bead if you hit a bad pot hole or uneven tread wear. I ran 255/50r16's on my '87 TA for years and had no problems, loved them.

GM LeMans/Luxo Blue- 2001 Firebird Formula
I just put some Firestone Firehawk SZ50 P255/50R16's on my rear stock rims. They look great. They definitely don't look too big and the sidewall isn't bulging out far. I wouldn't go wider on a stock rim.
