I'm running 285X35Xzr18 (without any clearance problems) all the way around, some people on the board run up to 315 on the back, however they have to mess with rolling the rear fender.

If you install a wider tire on the back than the front, the vehicle will not track properly on the road.

On a 9 1/2 inch wide rim, you probably don't want anything wider than around 285.

For an 8 1/2 rim, maybe a 245 or 255, although 255 is not a very common width.

That would be a VERY low profile tire. A 245/45/17 would be the closest match height-wise to a stock 275/40/17.

You do know that with running a 245/45/17 tire in front and a 285/35/18 tire in the rear, that those two tires sizes will give the car a very "odd" appearance? What I mean is since that front tire size will have a taller sidewall height, than the rear 285/35/18s the look will be "odd"! So IMO, to avoid the "odd" appearance your rear tire sidewall needs to be as tall,or taller than the front tire sidwall. You can do that by using a 275/40/18, or 285/40/18 instead of the 285/35/18.

And "Yes" I know that's a 1" height difference, since I've been doing it myself for over a year without any abs/brake problems.
