    Is it safe to do?

Ok so one of my friends buys this 04 mach1 and he has stock wheels on it but I noticed that the stock wheels are 17x8's and he has 275/40's on the back. Is this safe to do?
I have a set of ZR-1 style wheels that are 17x9.5's and I have 275/40's and prob should have gone with an 11inch wheel in the back. Can I put 315's on the 9.5's? or is it just to much?

it's too much... 315/35-17 are meant to be mounted on 17x11 to 17x13
    stay with 275/40-17
You won't get any benefits in terms of grip and you'll definitely lose grip when cornering since the tire isn't properly mounted.

fyi, 275/40-17 are to be properly mounted on 17x9 to 17x11, ideally mounted on 17x9.5

On my 94z, I had the factory 10 spoke SS wheels in 17x9.5. I had Sumitomo HTR-Z's on all four (275/40/R17 in front and 315/35/R17 in the rear). Of course the front tires fit perfectly. The tires on the rears also fit great. There was no appearance of it being bulged in any way and looked very natural. I didn't notice any difference in handling or grip. Ideally, a tire size as wide as a 315 should be mounted on a wheel that is 10.5 to 11.0 wide. However, in my case everything worked out fine and all looked great.

Cool thanks for the input guys. I didn't think it would have been a great idea because its so much of stretch. I hook up great right now on a stock internal motor with a couple of bolt ons but was just worried about tring to tame 350 to 400rwhp and stay on a street tire.
