You should at least go 10.5" or 11". You can get 315's to fit on a 9", but I don't really recommend it.

Might be a stupid question but why wouldnt you reccomend mounting on the rim? Also how do i get my hands on some 10.5 or 11 rims? also will they mount on the rear of 01 ss without any issues?

you would need one of these (3) rims to fit 315/35/17 tires:

    17*9
    17*9.5
    17*11

i had 315/35/17 Nitto Drag Radials on my car and they fit fine with no problems. i have a 2000 SS and since there is no change in the rear from 00-01 they will fit fine. the reason 17*9 might come as not being recommended is because its just to the point of the rim being to narrow for a tire that wide and could cause slow leaks where the bead meets the wheel lip. i had that on my passenger side rear. a slow leak that would lose about 5psi/month, and that can lead to uneven tire wear. you can pick up aftermarket rims on EBAY. if you go with Nitto D.R., go to www.onlinetires.com they are $165 each which is cheaper than discounttire ($200). select the right one so you get the ZR rated tires.

I just worry that the tire might pop the bead during an agressive maneuver. Especially with such a sticky tire.

So yall think they would work for track tires? Thats all im looking for is some rims and some good tires that will hook up.
Tired of the lack of traction issue
    Thanks

315/35-17 are meant to be PROPERLY mounted on wheel sizes 17x11 to 17x13.
17x11 can fit tires from 275/40-17 to 315/35-17
17x9 aren't meant to have tires wider than 275/40-17
and fwiw, a 275/40-17 tire is to be mounted on a 17x9 to 17x11 wheel, where the ideal mounting is on a 17x9.5

Basically, if you want a wider tire, get a wider wheel.
I love wide, but make it safe and have tires mounted properly.
