Drag radial tire pressure
Just picked up some nt05 nittos. 295/45 18s. I started them at 30 psi. Because I didn't want to run not enough pressure to begin with and it seemed like it was spinning a little too much for my liking on the street so I dropped them to 20 psi and it seems like a whole new tire as far as hooking goes. Anyone think this is too low to run all the time? And what kind of pressure are you guys running in your radials?

I run my Nitto 555r DR's right at 20-22psi on the street. Car dead hooks. At the track I typically go as low as 16-17psi. It's trial and error.
I've had them installed for a few years now and have not had any issues with running that pressure. However, my tire size is also a 275/40R17.

Thanks for the input. Hopefully ill get to the track atleast one more time before it shuts down. The car went 13.1 with the 10 year old eagle f1s that were on the wheels when I bought them. I was just curious if 20 psi was not enough for driving the car on the street. These are my first set of drag radials so I'm figuring it out as I go.

When you try them at the track, be sure to re-check the tire pressure after your burnout. Once the tire heats up, the air pressure will also increase. Therefore, you may need to start even lower. Again, it's trial and error.
Good luck, and let us know how you make out with the NT05R's. I hear they are a little stickier than Nitto's 555r drag radial.
With your profile, you have more side wall to your tire than I do with mine. I don't see it being a problem, but you may want to monitor them for awhile. You could also increase the pressure some and see how that works for you.

Had my nto5's (275/40/17) at 19psi at the track and got a 1.9 60 ft. When i have the Weld Pro Star's and Mickey Thomson's (275/50/15) on with 19 psi 1.56 60 ft. I know there is a bit more sidewall with the 15 inch rim but that's a big difference in 60ft times. I'm not to impressed with the Nittos.

I cut a 2.08 60 ft on the old eagle f1s on 25 psi. I'm really thinkin a 1.9 is really within reach for me, especially with 4.10s. My uncle was also unimpressed by the nittos and he had the nt05rs. 275/40 17 but it was just the right timing and right price range for me when I ran across them at a buddies. Hoping to get back to the track this week or next week and shoot for that 12 second pass again. Shooting 0-8 on each of my passes lol

Most people say run as high a pressure as you can and still hook.
My MT 275/40/17's like 23psi(1.75 to 1.85 60fts) at the track on the street I run 28 to 30psi

Some of you guys want to compare Nitto's and MT's. It is not fair. Nitto NT555 is a steet tire in the truest sense but MT's can be used on the street but they will not wear, perform, stop, and corner in rain, cold, and other conditions like the Nitto's. They may hook better but that is about it.

I believe everyone is talking about the Nitto 555R not the 555. Chris is talking about the NT05R, also a drag radial.
Maybe the OP is running a standard Nitto street tire? If so, yes that is way different. You are not going to hook with a street tire anywhere as good as a drag radial.
I assume he also has the NT05R, a drag radial, based on the thread subject.

Damn I run my 555r's at 30 psi on the street, didn't know you guys run them at 20! How's the wear on that? I treat my dr's just like a regular street tire

I have close to 13K miles on mine. Still some meat on them.

Heres a pic of my NTO5R's. They have about 600 miles on them.

Any drag radial on a whopping 18" rim is going to struggle some anyway no matter what tire pressure. Without much sidewall you are really going to have to experiment with tire pressures.
I run mine down as low as 13 psi at the track which works best, after the burnout and return road back to the pits they have 16-17 lbs. and I have to adjust accordingly.
But I only run sticky tires on a 15" wheel and won't use anything else, and prefer at least a 28" tire.
