I hear chrome tends to not want to stick to aluminum very well, especially if the aluminum is not prepped right(rough surface for chrome to BITE). My .02...
It doesn't always flake. My 9+ year old SS has factory chrome ZR1's, and there isn't a bit of flaking anywhere.

I like the look of polished wheels. Just don't care for the maintenance.

To be a bit more honest on my part, I... am lazy... I'd rather drive the car than clean (nooks and crannies) it... thats probably why my 10 spokes are starting to flake.

My wifes 2000 SS also has the optional SLP chrome 5 spokes and they still look like new, and it's driven daily.

I have heard and read that the chrome 10 spokes have had this problem over the years. I never hear of it on the optional 5 spoke wheels though.
Could have been a change in the process or a change in companies that did the work when the 10 spokes came out later in the production year???

Same here. Mine's a DD and just turned 96,000 miles. I think the ZR-1's, at least in 2000, must have had a better quality chrome finish than the 10-spokes that were available in '01-'02. Most of the complaints about chrome flaking that I've read about seem to be with the 10-spokes.

Edit: Firebirdjones beat me to it.

Has anyone tried clearcoating polished aluminum rims? I know the older corvette aluminum rims (70's, early 80's) came with a clearcoat. If it was done well, it seems like it could alleviate alot of the problems with polished aluminum rims.
