Navy Blue Metallic- '00 Formy A4
? for anyone running Nitto 555's or General UHP's
How do you like them?
I'm looking to get a new set of tires for my Formula (275/40/17), and have narrowed it down to those two for now.
I hear good things about the Nittos, and also some good things about the Generals. The Generals are also running a special, you get a $50 Am Ex gift car with a set of 4.
What I want to know:
How do they hook on the street?
How do they hook at the track?
How are they in the rain?
How do they ride/handle compared to you last set of tires?
And any other thoughts or suggestions would also be helpful.
What I'm looking for a is a summer type tire that's good in the rain, while being able to hook decently at the track. I don't race a lot, but I figure I'll hit the track about once a month this season.
Thanks!!

I have the 555 on the ta. They hook good for me. Took a 4000 launch at 20 psi last year and hooked. Watched a buddy run a 11.11 at 120 on 555/ 245 50 16 on his camaro. If your looking for good in the rain, you can get away with these without your ass end coming around at 35-40mph. Just my experience. On the street they do good, but if your going to race someone, make sure you spin them a little.

Thanks. How are they wearing? How many miles do you think you'll get out of them?
Thanks.

You're only going to get 8-10k miles out of them??
That's horrible. I might have to consider a different tire then, I can't afford to be replacing tires every ten months.

you can get more but you have to drive them nice. Remember man, they are drag radials. They are softer then regular street tires. Other DR's are even softer and suck in the rain.

DR's are made soft to hook.....soft = low milage no matter how nice you drive
(why have DR's if you're gonna drive nice anyway??)
All DR's suck in the rain, with Nitto's the best
(my experience due to the heavy rain we get in Florida)
The Generals are a good tire from what I've read recently, just a little more than what I'm willing to spend right now
(I believe Sarge turnd me on to them a few years ago & gave them a thumbs up)
I'm currently contemplating a set of Nexen N3000.....we'll see

Oh no, I wasn't talking about the drag radials, just the regular 555's.
Ok, so now the low mileage makes sense.
Oh, and rbob, the generals are only 120 each, not bad IMO. And they're running a deal where you get a $50 visa gift card if you buy 4.

I have the Nitto's NT555 all around 275/40/17.. i have put about 4 thousand miles on them.. and i leave rubber leaving my house EVERY morning going to school. And i still have alot of tread left, the front still have like 85% tread left as i can see.. and the backs.. if i had to guess.. 70-75% left. I did the penny thing, there isnt that much difference from the front and back, but u can tell when using something to measure.. the tires hook very well on street, and i have also ran them at the track about 8 times.. i get 1.9x 60' times.. Ok in rain also '
But to tell you the truth.. if i had to redo it.. i wouldn't of got them.. for me i would have gotten some BFG KDW up front. And some NITTO 555R ''Drag radials'' on the back.
Get some cheaper tires.. From all my friends that have them, Nitto's arnt the best ''long'' lasting tire.. there all very soft.2002 Camaro SS A4 - SLP# 2951 l MS4 l LT's w/ORY l F.A.S.T 78 & TB l Borla l Cutout l CME l TCI 3500 l 3.23's l !emissions l !sway

Just be aware that the General UHP's aren't summer performance tires, they are M&S rated, unlike the Nittos (or any other summer performance tire). Thats not a bad thing necessarily, but in order to get that rating, you have to compromise some dry/warm handling and traction performance. On the other hand, the UHP's have a treadwear rating of 380, which is much better than any other performance tire.
I had Nittos on my car, (NT555, not DR's) and I was very happy with them. They hooked great on the street and pretty good on the track as well. They are rated for 300 treadwear, which is still good for a performance tire.
I'm looking into some BFGoodrich G-Force Sports for my next set, they are supposed to have excellent dry handling and have a treadwear rating of 340, which is above average. They are also affordable, about the same price as the Nitto NT555's.
