    315's on a 9.5

my buddy told me that today he talked to a guy who was running 315's on his 9.5 rim...just wondering if that is actually safe to be doing. that tire seems to be way to big to fit on the rim

do good in turns compared to what? not only do i agree its not safe due to minium wheel width reccomendations by the manufacturers, but i will say you gain nothing in cornering capabilities by sticking the bigger tires on a rim than should be on there. in fact, all other things equal, you put a good set of 275s on those 9.5" rims and you will walk away from a car with tires too big for the rims on a road course. bigger isnt always better.

I dont go autocrossing with the tires... and they dont look all bulged around the rim like this (_) or anything actually its more like this |_| with a fat look.. and as far as autocrossing they might not be better there but i have gone out to the drags with my nitto 555 315's and i have also gone out with my old nitto dr's 275's and the dr's have been faster by like .2 .3 at the most...

Just to be clear I was being sarcatic only so many smilies on this sight. I wouldn't want to chance having the tire pop off.

Just because some guy did it is not justification to put a tire that's too large for a rim.

not safe... 315/35-17s are to be mounted on 17x11 to 17x13 wheels.
9.5 is not in that range.
You want wide tires, do it right... get wide rims.
I love wide, don't get me wrong... but safety 1st.
Plus you won't have any gain, since your contact patch will be screwed up... better performance w/ 275s on 9.5s than 315s on 9.5s.

    almost stock triple-black 2000 SS convertible with 17x11s on all 4 w/ 315s at the track or on the street with 18x10.5s on all 4 w/ 315s: (1), (2)

Your signature says you run 315's on 10.5's, that isnt in th range of 11-13...

Not to justify anything or anyone, but I have a friend who has 315's mounted on the stock 17x9.0 10 spoke SS wheels and has had no problems whatsoever, to include uneven tire wear. Even looking at it myself, there was no appearance that the tires looked bulged, or overstreched in any way. They actually looked pretty normal and decent.

Look at basically every single tire manufacturer and you'll see that running a 315 on a 10.5" wheel is in their safe zone. But, you'll never see them list anything below a 10.5". Why? Because it's stupid and unsafe.
