wondering if anyones seen a shift boot/plate

hard to describe but i'm wondering if anyone's seen a plate instead of the leather shift boot (m6). kind of like ferrari's stick cars. where the stick actually moves around in a cutout template of where the gears are. and is it even possible? i have a pro 5.0 shifter. i'll try and post a pic of what i'm talking about, but any help is appreciated!

    My life is a
    Ben Stiller movie.

i think it would be something we could take a stab at. It won't be cheap-but it would be custom. Maybe add some sexy etching work to it.

We also might need to swap shifters so we can have your throw pattern.

It would look pretty cool, but I don't think it would be very feasible for fast shifting, since you wouldn't be able to really bang the 2nd-3rd shift or the 4th-5th shift, or vise versa with downshifts.

You would have to actually move the shifter up-over-up or down-over-down, unlike a regular shift pattern, where you can just throw the shifter towards the detent and engage the next gear.

i already know its trickier to drive, but its also easier on your trans., no missed gears...

with some practice i think i could it as fast as i can now, its always bugged me how hard it is to find the gears, wtf were they thinking (oh yeah, push the autos lol)

i mostly want it because i hate the look of the shift boot, i'm trying to un-gm-engineer it. gm had some rough years as far as putting crap parts in there to save .05. still are doin it with some of their cars i believe

We tried to do this on my friends T/A. It really doesn't work on the T56. The shift pattern is way to close together. You might think it would mean no missed shifts, but its not the case. For instance, going into third gear, so much play would have to be in the third "slot" on the plate that you can actually bump 1st or 5th (depending on how the plate is cut) on a fast shift to third. Even if you got it right on, so every gear lined up perfectly with the slot in the plate, each slot would have to be not much bigger than the shifter itselft and all the slots would have to be super close togther. It would be difficult to get the shifter to slide in the slots on quick shifts.

We cut probably close to 10 plates with a plasma table, taking super careful measurments every time and still never got it right. Its just waaay to hard to get the slots to perfectly line up with every gear. I'll post some pics showing what I'm trying to say if I can get some of the plates back from my friend.

Its really not that expensive to try. A nice piece of sheet metal, a drill, and a way to cut the metal. I wouldn't advise anybody against trying it. Maybe you'll be able to get it right.
