What Happened to My Paint!?
So I head outside today for work and I notice this on my rear bumper...
What happened?! Looks like water got up under the paint around the hole and its bulging up... (kinda how paper looks when it's been wet and dries). Is this shoddy paintwork or was someone messing with my baby? (It did get a full paint job about a year ago)

Take your fingernail and go beyond and at the edge where its lifting and see if you can scratch the new paint up easily. If you can I'd say its bad paint prep from when
they painted. Was it a new bumper ?
Almost looks cracked like you got run into and flexed the bumper...Maybe
Either way its -ucked up bad. I'd be pissed.........2000 NBM WS6

It looks like you have a number of problems.... The way the paint is cracked it looks like you got hit, which started everything. The adhesion to the plastic bumper cover doesn't look good, which is why the paint is cracking off. When my neighbor backed into my bumper he put a dent into it which didn't come out and the bumper cover wrinkled but the paint didn't peel - it got spiderweb cracks. It looks like when your bumper was painted they didn't put an additive into the paint (I've heard it called a 'flexi' additive) that makes the paint film more pliable and flexible, suitable for "soft" surfaces like your bumper. You don't need it for parts that don't do any major flexing like your hood or spoiler, etc. I suspect that they didn't do the custom mix for your car, just painted it all with the same paint.

Yep, it definitely looks like you got hit and that the paint prep for the job was not a very good one.

My life is a- Ben Stiller movie.
considering the size and position, i'd say some jag off with a lifted truck and hitch backed into you and didn't even feel it.

Get the people who did a shitty paint job to fix it. The paint should not be coming off like that. It should have only spider webbed, not come off!

there is no excuse for that...lets say that the theory that someone hit him is accurate. that bumper from the factory came in a gelcoat primer, if its been messed with or its an aftermarket bumper(not saying it is) most of them come sparayed in a water born primer...nothing that i know of will eat through it its an excellent base especially for rubber/ eurothane parts... whatever primer that was laid ont he bumper has not adhered to the bumper...or when they painted it the actual paint lifted the primer under no circumstance is this supposed to happy i would agree with the assumption that this is bad prep work or a bad paint....not neccessarily the paint job but the paint...a few years ago a division of PPG had this problem with a line of paint called OMNI specifically with the OMNI AU series, even when using the OMNI primer the the basecoat would adhere to the primer and the primer would adhere to the paint, but when you sprayed the clear it would all lift together...the paint would lay well but after some time or you got anything on the paint it would leave bubbles and start to peel, as far as i know all the Paint has been recalled... on the thought of a bad flexiblizer, most paints now come with some sort of flex agent already mixed into the paint since most cars made now have at least some if not mostly flexible paneling(saturn)...take it back to the people who painted it. if they wont fix it ask them if they mind if you take it to a couple other places for a second opinion and then reconsult them. i bet they would rather keep their mistakes in house instead of having their competitors know about it

I've never seen paint do that. But i did feel sorry for the elderly guy who backed his F150 into the front fo my car. You should have seen the look on his face, he felt really bad.

I have. If there is not enough flex agent added it will do that. Also, even with the flex agent, it only "flexs" so far.

true...most the time it will spyder web before it cracks like that though...but in the end it is hard paint and the bumpers and fenders are a plastic and give much more than the paint

Man that suxxxxxxxxxxxxx!!!! Looks like someone hit it to me but if noone hit you I would do just like the guy above said and see if the shop minds if you get other opinions about the problem. Maybe the place you got it painted at will meet you halfway at least.
