My life is a- Ben Stiller movie.
looked at a black car-is orange peel common?
i was looking at an 02 ws.6. The doors were all orange-peely
are all the black ones like this? I saw the fender looked fine, but the door really upset me.
The car was never painted and ony had 35000-single owner and garaged.

Jut about all mass produced cars will have orange peel in the paint. Its more apparent on dark, non-metallic colors.
The reason you don't see orange peel on custom painted cars is because they take the time to wetsand the finish and make it perfectly smooth. On a production line, its just not feasible from a cost or time standpoint to have people sand the vehicles by hand.

it has to be wet sanded to remove the peel.
here in detroit my dads friend is the painter for FORD who does all the paint jobs for the cars in the AUTO SHOW across the world.
when you go to the international car shows people see this perfect paint job which is just for the cars on display and which are perfect. its a different story when they do it on the lines with machines. they are there for mass production and effeienty to the makers making it "its good anought to sell look"

Pewter metallic- 2000 Camaro SS
Black=the potential to be the baddest color but reality sets in and you hate it because you can't keep it clean longer than 5 minutes.

No offence, but unless u want glass looking paint, any paint job excluding something custom is gonna look like that.

Navy Blue Metallic- 2002 Z28
You could take it to a body shop, have them sand it with 1500-2000 grit to get rid of the orange peel and it would look like glass. If you find the right place, and get the whole car done, you might get a deal...I work at a body shop, and a guy brought in his Cadillac Escalade to get buffed, paid about $550 for the whole tank. But if its just the door thats pissin you off, i dont see that costin too much.

Pewter metallic- 2000 Camaro SS
I have a lot of black areas on my car, sail panel, painted hood scoop, the painted stripe down the spoiler and they look fantastic, but they frustrate the hell out of me keeping them clean and pristine. I don't know what actually frustrates me more, the black areas or the polished wheels

That's an installed option on the vettes as well OP
If you had a PTA (Paint Thickness Gauge) you can see how much paint you'd have to work with, as wetsanding will be an option to smooth the paint flat
The downside is that while your paint will look smooth and glassy, your clearcoat will be thinner

Or from 10 feet away!
I was initially looking for a black vette when I was in the market a couple of years ago. I settled for a torch red, as it was the best car for the money I could buy at the time. I just missed out on a similar Z06 in Houston black/red, just by one day!
Anyway, I love detailing dark colors...
