Hood Bird/Paint Question.
I just ordered this in black...

When I apply this I want to remove the clearcoat first. This way I can have a paint shop clearcoat over it to help protect and seal it in. Is color sanding easy enough if I take my time? I have no prior body shop experience. I would like to save some money, if possible, by having the paint shop just apply the clear coat. Or should I leave all of this to a pro?Last edited by LS1_TA_2002; 05-09-2007 at 08:55 PM.

No clear coat needed. I put my bird on myself. Take your time and make sure to get all the bubbles out. Here is the site I used for how to apply my decals. http://www.decaldriveway.com/decalInstall/
For something as big as the hood bird you will want to use the wet method.

I did not mean you cannot do clear coat. Just it is not needed. I had an 87 with the bird on the hood for 13 years and since it was a garage queen never had a problem with the decal.

yeah you CAN clear over vinyl... would i do it? hell no... not worth the work... if you're willing to do all that work you might as well use that vinyl as a pattern to paint it on your hood... paint the hood the color that you want the bird to be..... place decal on..... spray the entire hood the color of your car.... remove the decal... clear coat over... and wah-LA got yourself a custom painted hood using the decal as a stencil sorta...

i personaly like when viynal is over paint casue you get that smooth the flat look of the sticker LOOK, but i guess some people like everything to be smooth by taken off the orig. clear starting flat then-viyanl then clear= a flat surface w/ the viyanl
