Pewter metallic- 2000 Camaro SS
I am not sure I am understanding your question correctly, so if I am wrong forgive me in advance. I am assuming you want to paint it correctly once and not re-paint it down the line. When I painted mine and a few others, I didn't sand them, I used an adhesion promotor instead. I then used a high temp(1200 degree) gloss black paint applying 2-3 coats. I then finished up by putting several coats of high temp clear coat on it(500 degree) and its been over a year now with no issues. If you want less texture to it you can sand it like you mentioned, several people do that and have seen very nice results.

I think you're after a non-paint method i assume. I think any sanding will only leave a more dull finish/ just take your time and prep and paint it.
