    Carbon Fiber SS Hood *Pics*

Alright, so I've been MIA for the past month; my car got rear-ended sitting at a light, so it's been off the road, but now she's back. The spoiler was split, so I decided to just get an SS spoiler, and with that, since there was already going to be matched paint, I threw in a hood....

I'm sure everyone on here has seen this on e-bay, I watched it for a month or so before I decided to take a chance, and since nobody on any of our boards seemed to have one, I thought it'd be a good opportunity to jump in head first.

Since none of our sponsors carry this, or anything comparable, I think I'm in the clear here, but if not, someone just yell at me and I'll edit-
The hood came off e-bay from Octane Motorsports, who then ordered it through C-wings (www.importfan.com). It's a solid Carbon fiber hood, basically SS -style though the cowl is a little bit different as far as dimensions go. Okay, so, to cover the basics: Why did I put a carbon fiber hood on a domestic? Because it was relatively inexpensive, and only weighs 14 lbs with the hood latch mounted, find me anything less than a skinned and pinned hood at that weight, and I'll change my argument! Plus, I've always thought that CF had a clean look to it when treated right.

The hood arrived gel coated, nice and pretty, and if one was inclined, could have just been bolted up and driven. While I don't think it looked bad that way, it just wasn't how I wanted the car, so basically I had an inverse manta painted; I'm sure you can figure it out, they just masked off the cowl and left it unpainted (still confused? Look below!)

The hood uses the factory latch, but unfortunately, my paranoia is going to force me to pin it at the front corners, I'll be using the Mr. Gasket Secure hood locks, as they're relatively flush, and don't require too much destruction to mount up.

The factory hood struts are rated at 78 lbs/ft, so you can imagine, they don't work on this hood, I'm still working on finding a strut closer to 20 lb/foot with the right dimensions, I'll update you when/if I find one. Hopefully that answers all of the questions, but if not, just ask!

Daytime pictures will come soon, maybe by the end of the week if I can find time between work/school...

    It looks really good.

You might try the struts from a factory SS as they should be closer to what you need.

The hood needs tweaked a little bit, but it's close. I'm going to pin it down, just to be safe, and that'll make it 100%.

I thought about the factory SS struts, but nobody can give me a part number on them, and all of my sources said they used the same struts, so I hit a dead end on that one... maybe I'll call the dealership.

It looks really good. I am sure this is a dumb question, but can you see the carbon fiber or is is all black?

I'll post up some better pics showing the manta stripe and pinstriping, but in short, it's just cleared carbon fiber. My only regret is that they painted the underside flat black, and the paint shop didn't have any luck getting it stripped; I would have preferred to have the underside all CF...

What do you mean they didn't have ant luck? They should have been able to sand it off and buff it.

Since it has the typical odd formations on the underside, they didn't want to sand it, since there's nothing solid to the hood to ensure that they wouldn't sand into CF. Yeah, I know, they could have just hand sanded and taken their time.... but for some reason they said it just wouldn't work, and they couldn't get a chemical to strip it. Apparently when you have unpainted CF, sunlight and UV rays come through pretty effectively, which is why they usually come pre-painted on one side. Beats me though, this whole notion of CF is pretty new to me!

The second pic is what he actually has. I think it looks sick especially with the c6 wheels.

ohhh... well i definitely wouldnt change it...

yea performance is more imporant than looks, but its not like that weight difference is that huge...

plus, to that degree, appearance outweighs performance. i would leave the CF SS scoop on

For they LT1 there was two part numbers for the Z28 and the SS from SLP.

They (slp) were selling a crate full of take -offs from LT1 cars on E-bay.

    I'll look into that...

this hood shaved off near 50 lbs of weight; 100 lbs takes off a tenth in the 1/4, equal to roughly 10 HP. Little amounts add up pretty quick, I'm not trying to lower the weight substantially, I just want to counter the weight of the bottle, rear seat delete box, and soon to be roll cage. Ultimately I'd like to get the car at about 3250 race ready.

    Thanks for the compliments guys!
