Anyone used SEM Color Coat
Has anyone used SEM Color Coat to recolor any interior pieces? If so How did it come out and would you use it again?

Went down and bought 2 cans of the gloss black and tried it out on a smooth flat peice of plastic. Not the finish I was looking for. It actually lays down with a very light texture kind of like an orange peel. You cant sand it because it is an elastomeric coating. At least I don't think you can. I was looking for a smooth show car finish. This is just a spray can so I dont know if buying it in cans and mixing to spray in a gun would be any different. It is almost like the stuff in the spray can isn't thined enough or the nozzel is to small to spray if smooth. I think I am going to keep looking. cant tell yet how it would hold up against sratching but might be a good choice if you looking to just get the color back or change the color of the interior.
Foot note The can says you can use it on carpet lol

could depend on how you spray it too. Thicker coat then a fast thinner coat would flatten it out.

I'm Not using the SEM stuff but I decided to go down to the parts store and just pick up some Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter, Sand able primer, Universal Black and Clear Top Coat. I am painting the Headlight switch Bezel and Vent, Radio bezel but Not he vents, Instrument Bezel, and the passenger Vent and bezel. I just finished the Headlight bezel and the vent but had disaster strike on the instrument bezel. The headlight bezel looks just like I wanted it to. I will take a picture of it later. I was almost done polishing the instrument bezel when it slipped from my hands and the paint got F'd up by my polisher. I tried to wet sand it to smooth it out so I could blend it and the paint for some reason didn't dry under the new color I put down and I have a sticky mess that I will have to tear all the way down to the plastic and start over. I think the Adhesion promoter didn't dry all the way or I used to much so try, try again!!! lol
I sanded all the plastic smooth so it didn't have that texture to it anymore and if I can get the rest of the peices to look like the headlight bezel and vent... I wil be happy. Hopefully it will last.

The long story short of this is that I was tring to find a way to do this using nothing but spray cans of paint or a coating. What I have found out is that if you know anything about painting DON'T USE CANS!!!! lol The one part came out good but you can see what happend on the other part...Cluster F**K. Actually painting the parts should be the easy part of this project but it has turned out to be the toughest. Buy a spray gun and cans of paint and spend that frustration on mixing not spraying. I wish I had gone with my gut but I thought I was good enough to do it with cans...wrong lol.
After I am done I am going to go to the junk yard and get an interior panel and use that SEM Color Coat on it and I will post some pics and my findings as well as the rest of this story but as you can tell I have a ways to go.

No the sanding flat is not that bad. about an hour. I used 220 to take it down and then 400 wet to take off the ruff. then clean and start spraying.

Yes I cleaned it with Purple power. Plus you can tell when you are sanding it where the polly soaked plastic ends and the pure stuff begins. It sand rather brown and then turns light gray.
I figured out what went wrong today. When you sand the plastic and wash it water gets trapped in the light sratches. LOL I even used alcohol after washing but like the water the alcohol gets trapped and I didn't put it in the sun to dry so when I put the Adhesion promoter on the alcohol hadn't evaperated all the way. So it was a chain effect of the promoter never dried all the way and then the primer, paint, clear because someone was talking to me and I just flat out screewed the pooch on the instrument bezel. All good now. I got all the paint off and it is back in primer and I will get some paint on it friday.

I wouldn't want to do this anywere that see's a lot of wear. It's just paint so on the consol it would look like crap after a month or two.
