A good old $.97 car wash sponge from Walmart. Works very well I think.

Yep......You can find good one's around fairly cheap ( 2 - 4 bucks ) so it won't break the bank if you have to buy a few a year.....

I use a sponge with cloth over it for the car and the bike.
I use Brillo pads for the white walls on the bike

I slide my hand on my car when soap is on the car and if feels bumpy then its time to clay. But i try and do it once every 3 months.

Is your car a daily driver ??? I find that once or twice a year is usually enough...?

100% cotton wash mit. Haven't bought into the whole microfiber thing yet. Never a tshirt or sponge... just smearing the dirt around on the surface. Might as well get that sandpaper s99TA uses.

The most common used tool to wash your car with is a Sheepskin Wash Mitt, but in my opinion the very best thing to use is a Natural Sea Sponge.
I just woudn't use any sponge. Washing your car is critical, that's when most of us introduce swirl marks to the paint.
You should use the two-bucket method. One bucket you have car wash soap, and the other bucket with plain clean water. As you use your soap soaked wash mitt, you rinse it in the bucket with water before you dip back into the soap water, that way you keep bebris out.
Clay bar is optional, use it if it's needed.
I use one wash mitt to do the hood, roof, and trunk, and another one to do the lower part of the car.
