It's not the best due to the intense heat it causes condinsation and moisture where you don't want it.
Not to say I haven't done it 100's of times before I knew better.
Weather tight connectors are sealed but not made to withstand extreme pressures from pressure/steam cleaners.

I use light soap, exp: engine bay cleaner soap. and rinse off.. and let it dry in sun, just wipe off the top so no freaking water spots will show.. I HATE water spots..

I use simple green on a cold water, rinse and then blow dry the bay with my backpack blower before washing the car.

here is what i d to clean my engine bay...

first (car should be cooled down for this part) i spray the entire engine every where with windex and simple green mix... i turn the car on and let it get to running temp...
i turn it off and let it cool for 15 mins and spray it down with water...
    then i repeat this again...
then i get my other spray bottle with black magic and amor all mixed... i spray the entire engine with that and use a towel where i can reched to spread it around and coat what i can... i spray it again after the rub down and turn the car on again and let it get to running temp... then i shut off and let it cool and hose it off... looks brand new every time...
