Volume goes up and down randomly on its own

Car is a 2001 WS6 with the factory Monsoon system. Nothing aftermarket. Sometimes, the music volume goes up and down randomly on it's own, and it's very annoying. This happens regardless of whether I am playing off a CD or the radio. Other days I'll turn it on and it will play fine all day. It seems to have this problem roughly half the time. What is causing this, and what do I need to fix/replace to remedy the issue?

Prob the problem is in your deck. Cleaning it may help. May not. And that means taking it all apart and cleaning it. Might be a good time to upgrade your system. That's my advice.

It is called SCV Sound Control Volume. The louder your car gets it will increase your volume. The level behind the volume knob push it down.

Yeah I agree with dalesabin, I didn't know my first camaro had that scv and was concerned the first few times it happened to me. Just play with the little thing behind the volume and it should take care of it.

The Firebird/TA/WS6 Monsoon does not have SCV (Sound Control
Volume).

Yes.

Volume knob is most likely slipping internally, a problem which I can only think to resolve by replacement of the head unit. Mine is pretty crappy as well, I can touch it and the volume goes to max, and I spin it fast and it will go nowhere.

I remember when I first got my z it was doing this but luckily it was the scv. When a member here told me what it was I was like wtf??? Hahahahahaha gotta love a easy fix.
