LEDs have a resistor on them for a specific voltage- you probably put one made for 12v on a 110v... I built an LED setup a few years back for my old motorcycle:

The resistors are different depending on voltage, color, and number of LEDs you're running in a series. I had over 130 LEDs on the bike (above each bank of the motor with a sequential strobe controller, under the rear fender, in the front spoiler, under the motor... it's been 5 years so I don't remember all of them). I've done sets in boxes, interiors of cars... they can go anywhere just make sure you wire them right!

Do a seach I know this has been coverd several times. Silvanya or how ever you spell it has a list of all the bulb sizes and were they go. From this you can cross referance them to led's made to direct replace the bulbs in your dash. This is one I pulled for my 97 but go to thier web site and put your year and modle in and it will tell you.

oops- I thought you meant custom LED setups- if you're just looking to replace the bulbs that's a breeze!

Most of those are 161's and 194's. See the list above and then go to superbrightleds and buy them. Not really sure how many you'll need to complete the project- I've been thinking about doing it myself but I've got way too many other projects ahead of this one.

See I on the other hand am looking for custom LED's. I like the look of the pontiac dash and have a lovely firehawk faceplate in pontiac orange lighting over my stereo. I think some matching footwell lighting would set off the interior nicely. Sadly I have no clue how to match the color and wire everything up right. I was hoping to get a good look at the ford ambient lighting system to see how they integrated it and get some ideas from there but nobody I know has one. tempted to go to the ford dealer and just ask to look at it.

The deal with ambient lighting you'd need to tuck wide-angle LEDs out of sight so that the bulb is not directly visable. As for the lighting around the cupholders, you could try something like "neon string lights" (search for it, you'll see what I'm talking about) and you could channel out the cup holder enough to install it and then cut it to length.

    Edit:
Then again, you could just order the Ford kit for about $270 but you could build your own for under $100 easy.

Oh, and most of the lights in our dash have color condoms on them to make them red- I'm not sure if any are colorized by the actual guage plates, but you should be able to buy blue LEDs for most of them to change the color. I know the door panels have little red plastic pieces in them to make them red, so they'd need to be popped out. I'm probably going to do a big LED change-out in April if all goes well.

Here's some instructions even though they are for a Camaro:
    http://www.keliente.com/LED.htm

Most will be plug-n-play but ones like the TCS, Headlight, and fog light switch all use soldered LEDs. You'll have to match the resistor to the LED so as to not burn up the LED. Also, the radio is going to be red- you can swap it out with a Camaro radio or go aftermarket.

You cannot use the gauge cluster from a T/A. You need to get one for a Camaro. They are red painted on the back, so you need to sand off the paint. As far as the LEDs go, buy high powered. The high powered LEDs will light up your needles better. I'll take some pictures and post what I've done.

I know when I did the guage in my wife's old Lancer, I was able to sand down the paint/tint on the gauges using a light wire wheel on my dremel. Real easy.

The T/A's red is impregnated with the plastic, so it cannot be removed. Only the Camaros were painted on.
