Is my radio/ amp bad? (Front speakers sound blown)
So, I dropped my car off at a local shop to have the rear hatch tinted. While there I asked them to check my front speakers as they sound like they're blown when I turn up the volume.
The shop called and said they replaced the speakers which did not solve the problem. They say they suspect it's either the radio or the amp...
Any input would be appreciated!
BTW I'm NOT a big stereo person. I have no interest in amps, kicker boxes or anything like that. I just want my radio to play.....

So the new speakers make the same noise as the old stockers? Do your trust the shop? Did you see them actually install new speakers? Is it the radio or cd player or both that produce the shitty sound?
If the amp was blown, you probably wouldn't be getting any signal for any speaker.

There is a separate amp in our cars for the rear hatch speakers correct? And the front and rear sail-panel speakers run off of the radio amp? Just curious. Been awhile since I thought about the Monsoon stereo system.

Well the reason I ask is because if all 4 speakers run off the amp in the radio, all 4 speakers should be getting a weak signal if the amp itself is going out.
You mentioned you are just getting a shitty sound to the fronts.
Have you pulled the radio and checked the wiring?
Also - is it at all volumes or just when you turn it up? I had loose grille covers in the front of my 96 I had which vibrated during loud volume...which in turn made the speakers in the front "sound" like shit...even though they were fine.
Just to check, you could hold your hand to the grille to make it tight while the speaker is playing and see if that makes an improvement.

^ If that doesn't work and you want to get it done fast, you could start replacing components.
I would bet on the HU being at fault first, but I would be checking the wiring and speakers first myself. Meaning, hooking your stock spears up to a a different working location to make sure their good or bad.

If you a bad or bad speakers you can swap one of them with one of the good ones to be sure is bad. If the problem follows the speaker then it is the speaker. If the speakers are good then it could be wiring, amp or the radio.
You could have one or more speakers not working properly with a bad amp. I have a JL 6 channel amp and I had one channel that when out. The rest worked fine. So it could be an amp issue or radio issue.

05-06-2011, 11:35 AM #13I believe they make HU's now that do. I'm not sure b/c I don't mind the monsoon, it's far from the worst system ever put into a vehicle.
BTW, at this point consensus is either a bad head unit or amp......
