Police: Carjacker crashes, hurts 2

BRADENTON --Two hours after David Halliwell drove his red Pontiac GTO away from the car lot at Cox Chevrolet on Cortez Road, someone else was driving it away from him.

Halliwell said the carjacker was waiting for him outside his friend's house at the 4900 block of 30th Street, where he demanded the keys to the car at gunpoint, according to authorities.

"I opened the door and he was right there," Halliwell said.

After turning over the keys to his car, Halliwell called 911.

The chase began when a Manatee County Sheriff's deputy picked up the call and spotted the carjacker speeding down a road near Cedar Hammock, said Lt. William Evers.

Undeterred by stop sticks launched in his path, he continued down Ninth Street West until he plowed into a Nissan Altima at Sixth Avenue West, where he fled on foot from the scene, according to authorities. A man and a woman inside the Altima were badly injured.

"Our deputies couldn't pursue because he was going so fast," sheriff's Sgt. Rod Taylor said.

The distance between the car and the deputies was too great by the time it had reached McKechnie Field, so deputies weren't able to witness the accident up close, said Lt. William Vitaioli.

"All they saw was a little glimpse of red in a big puff of smoke, that's how far back they were," he said.

Bo Atherton, a witness who was parked at Anderson Auto on the southeast corner of Sixth Avenue and Ninth Street, estimated the Pontiac was traveling about 120 mph when it entered the intersection.

"The kid got out of the car and took off running," he said.

Others who witnessed the accident took off behind the carjacker and were able to help deputies catch him, Atherton said.

At the accident scene, the Altima was wrapped around the traffic signal pole on the northeast corner of the intersection.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, whose name has not been released, was a juvenile who ran away from his home in Broward County six weeks ago, said Manatee County Sheriff's Detective Bill Waldron.

The teenager has been charged with armed robbery, aggravated fleeing to elude and leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury, Waldron said.

"If someone were to die, those charges would be upgraded to vehicular homicide," he said.

Halliwell, who was glad he had insurance on the car, was more concerned about the victims of the accident than his vehicle.

"I just didn't want anyone to get hurt and somebody did," he said.

The 04,05 & 06 GTO's are 3900 lbs of very thick steel in todays standards, Kinda like the cars of the 60's and 70's except with very much built in safety technology. Remember this car in Australia which is called a Holden Monaro CV8 HSV was completely designed to race and to be a very safe car in case of accidents on a track.
I guess it really shows by this ( and many other pics on the net ) that high MPH frontal crashes in the late model GTO's are 'Relatively Safe' cars in crashes.
Remember the 15 yr old kid got out and 'ran' before being apprehended by the 'good samaritans'.......lol
