It is no harder to launch an IRS car than it is to launch a live axle car. In fact, the potential traction is actually better, because both rear tires will tend to stay planted even though the chassis is trying to twist.

The issues are breakage and weight. Relative to a live axle, the IRS is both heavy and fragile. Yes, it can be made to be pretty stout strength-wise, but that adds weight, and you still have a lot more "weak" places that are susceptible to failure.

As for 96 Cobras....the 98 I had many years ago went 13.6 @ 104 mph, bone stock. Certainly the LS1 F-body is capable of much better than that, but the ability to surprise a "cocky" [inser car here] owner was there. "Bolt-ons" were also mentioned relative to the 96 Cobra. Trivia: The quickest stock-internal (ie...'bolt-on') 96-98 M5 Cobra is quicker than the quickest stock-internal (ie...'bolt-on') 98-02 LS1 F-body.

Yup....for anything other than building an all-out race car, I'd take the LS1 F-body too. But be careful with your generalizations. Lack of experience shows up quick.

it's like if F body LSs are unbeatable here! all I was saying is that I have beat 2 firebirds and got very close to a lightly modded SS before on my lightly-mild modded 96 cobra (I'm pretty sure that if I had gears I would have got that SS)

I know that when you build a all out racing car there is no telling

I love it when you come out of the woodworks to set peope straight, Bob.

I didn't quite know how to respond to the guy saying that a bolt-on 96 Cobra is not a match for an LS1. That's ridiculous.

Please feel free to provide evidence of this stock internal 96-98 Cobra running faster times than a similarly modded LS1.

Dude read the name of this website....it's called LS1.com so yeah people are going to be partial to their cars and react unfavorably when someone comes in talking shit. The same way you'd be if you were ever on a ford site and an LS1 guy came in talking about how he was killing all these cobras.

    Except that would be believable.

    Hard to believe a mildly-modded 96 cobra can beat a mildly-modded LS1..
