I test drove an EVO 9 MR. Damn nice cars. I couldn't figure out how to launch the damn thing though. I was holding the RPMs at 6000 and dumping the clutch. All I got from it was a bog and then a take off. What's the trick?

rev limiter and slip the clutch, you want a little tire spin to save the drivetrain.

You have to slip it for a second to get the car moving then release the clutch fully and stay hard on the gas. Its much different than launching RWD or FWD.

I gotcha. I thought that was a car you'd dump. My bad. I have to slip it on my car too. Even the factory clutch in the EVO is touchy. I give props to you guys that can launch it. It would take me much more practice.

  5. #25
Yes it does take practice for sure. In my 6 years of driving 5 of them have been with AWD turbo cars

The elevation in Las Cruses, NM is approx 4000 feet. If you correct the 1/4 time to sea level, you would reduce your time by 1 sec.

If the car was brand new, you may have also been cooking the clutch.

Exactly what my response was gonna be. The air out here sucks, its pretty hard to go fast out here as the density altitude is weak, exactly about a second slower than sea level. If you got an 11 second car out here pending traction ability its gonna be a solid ten second ride at sea level!

Your car even as a "ringer" could only run approx 12.7 @111mph at best. The pro drivers in the 1998 Camaro in HighTech only ran 12.98 @110...these were pro drivers don't forget! Most fast '98-'02 Camaro's run 13.0 @ 110....and these are few and far btwn! How can your car beat an 11.8 second car? That is like saying you can beat my car with me running 150 wet shot. There is no possible way a basically stock '98 can beat an 11 second car....this is not possible. Something is missing from the story....have you ever run your car in the quarter?

Not mad, just don't know what you are doing to be that fast? Is it a hard top, power nothing 1LE version that is only 3300lbs? If you have some secret as to how you are beating 11 second cars, I want to know it so I can change my driving techniques!

You must have not read all the posts, I didn't say that my ls1 was beating 11.80 cars. I beat two stock 2006 model EVO 9's in my kill post, one of which ran a 13.2 at 4000 feet. The Evo that I referred to later in the thread is modded and runs 11.80's at 4000 feet altitude on nitrous, drivetrain, turbo ,exaust and tune. His car will beat my ls1, but I had called him out against my 383 vortech supercharged third gen camaro that runs 11.5 at 128 at 4000ft altitude on pump gas and everyone was talking trash and he showed and made excuses and wouldn't run, than he was supposed to meet me the next day and didn't show!

Plus yea I ran my ls1 stock on street tires at no problem raceway at sea level in louisiana and ran a 12.90 at 110 but the car stock was slower here in las cruces. Now as stated earlier I did all free mods, exaust, pro 5.0 shifter, smooth bellows and mti lid and dont have track times yet with bolt ons but have been beating some pretty fast cars on the street and could probably pull off mid 12's in the quarter at sea level with the few bolt ons. Plus i've got a heads and cam iron block 6.0 im building on the side thats gonna be nasty with rectangal port LS7 style heads and MS4 cam.
But driving helps alot, i've never been beat in my 98 ls1 against any other stock or lightly modded ls1 fbodys.

Not to change conversation but my friend has a WRX Sti built all to hell and it reall don't matter bottom end top end what ever. He has walked many Vettes on the top. Like 120 plus of course it is built all to hell. If you throw enought money at a Pinto it can have a hell of a top end anyway. Granted stock for stock a stock LS1 will pull most any AWD up top.

I dont think there are STOCK ls1's that trap that high. I was under the impression that we are trapping around 105 stock.

I was under the impression depending on tranny type, year and such that the LS1s can trap as low as 105-106, and up to 109-110... 111 being a complete ringer of the bunch

auto's run around 103-106....6spds run 108-111 stock. Maybe I missed a post or two, but I hear you....I never use to lose either in my 4.10 LS1...maybe my gears gave me what I needed, but my bud with a 4.10 WS6 versus my Camaro 4.10's were dead even up over 100mph. Mine was a '99 and his was a '00. Best I ran with 4.10s, cat back, lid, and ftra was 13.25@109.2mph, and believe me, I was fast! This was on a 2.1 60ft.

Good luck running your car....I know driving is a big part of the time slip you recv!

I did also and didn't have that problem. I just floored it and dumped while keeping my right foot planted. I do the same thing with my colt, works like a charm.
