i had a 5.0 and what i REALLY dont get is why people stick with a 347 when a stroker 351w (408) will fit in there just as easily and a MUCH stronger block.

There's no such thing as a 2007 GTO.

MSRP of a base 2006 GTO was $31,290 (Source)

GM does not, nor has it ever rated its HP for the rear wheels. However, the LS1 was significantly under-rated, in that it routinely put down about the same RWHP as the advertised SAE Net HP (305 in non-SS/WS6 trim). The same LS1 in the Vette and GTO was rated at 350 HP, and put down virtually identical RWHP numbers as the 305 HP LS1 F-bodys.

Since then, it seems people want to always claim the LS(insert number here) is under-rated, when in fact, only the LS1 really was (at least significantly).

The LS2 in either the Vette or GTO typically puts down in the neighborhood of 350 RWHP, making its 400 SAE net advertised HP rating pretty much spot on.

The LS6 in the C5 Z06 typically put down ~355 RWHP, lining up nicely with is 405 advertised HP.

And on, and on, and on.

For Ford, the only real "under-rated" powerplant was the 03/04 Cobra motor (though not as significantly under-rated as the LS1 in the F-body). It typically put down ~360-365 RWHP on a rating of 390.

03/04 Mach 1's are rated pretty accurately, as are 05+ 3 Valve GTs (perhaps slightly under, but again, nowhere near LS1 F-body under).

Not too many folks put 4V 5.4s in their Mustangs because the motor is physically much bigger than the already large 4V 4.6 (and its quite a bit heavier, given that the vast majority are iron blocks). How bad is it? You can't remove the valve covers with the motor in the car (at least not without some hacking). Additionally, performance parts are VERY hard to find (especially intakes).

Few people buy the 5.0 "Cammer" from Ford, but there are quite a few that obtain similar displacements through either "big bore" 4.6s or stroked 4.6s.

Actually, there are a lot changes that have to be made to put a 351W in place of a 5.0; it is an easy, but not a direct, swap. A 351W block had a deck height that is 1.3 inches higher than a 5.0/302. Due to its physically larger size, there is a greater amount of weight over the front tires.

I agree, though, it is a worthy swap.

the weight difference is only about 50lbs., very well worth it for 60ci+ possibility and a much stronger block. as for changing parts, it's probably the closest to plug-n-play when changing blocks as it gets.

I agree that the swap is simple relative to a lot of other swaps. My point is that there's more to it than just taking one engine out and putting in another. To do it correctly, there are some hidden costs and considerations with the it.

As for the added weight, it's actually closer to 65 or 70; I need to look back through my notes I took the last time. Even at 50 lbs, that is a significant amount of added weight up front. I offset the weight with aluminum heads and by relocating the battery.

Also, the added torque of the new engine will twist the fox body into a pretzel, unless some stiffening is performed.

When done correctly, the swap is, indeed, worth it...makes for a monster, especially in a car that weighs less than 3000 lbs.

By the way, I believe we have taken this thread WAY off base with regards to the original post....
