03/04 Cobras made ~365 RWHP stock. They do vary somewhat. They are a couple hundred lbs heavier than the earlier models, but still have pretty stout acceleration and are very easy to mod. Stock, they were high a high 12 to low 13 second car. A really good driver on a really good track could get a 12.6 or so out of them.

2000 Cobra Rs are extremely rare (watch out for fakes). They are mostly race or show cars, and it is very rare to see one on the street. They were heavy (that iron 5.4 block added lots of weight), even though they were essentially 'stripped' from the factory. There really weren't enough stock examples that were drag raced to get a good feel or what they run, but in general, figure high 12's to perhaps low 13s. I've seen what are supposed to be "stock" dynos vary from 340 RWHP to 375 RWHP. Again, not enough test samples to really pin it down.
the one cobra I raced beat me a hell of a lot better than only 45 more rwhp than me. I met the terminator that day. No, I dont think it was an R. Thanks for the info.

Cobra Rs are ridiculous, you should know it if you run one. EXTREMELY rare, two seats only, high spoiler, unique hood with a cowl (2003-04 Cobra has an air extractor hood). You should be more likely to race Lamborghinis on a regular basis than to ever race a true (not clone) 2000 Mustang Cobra R. That car was supposed to be Ford's answer to the C5 Corvette, to which GM immediately responded with the 2001 Z06 (same power rating, less weight FTW).

The 2000 Cobra R was NOT developed to compete with the C5 Vette (which came out 3 years earlier and was produced in far, far greater numbers). It was the 3rd (and so far, the last) in a line of extremely limited, road race prepped "R" Cobras that Ford buillt over several years (1993, 1995, and 2000). Ford required potential owners to have some sort of competition license before you could buy one.

    - The 93 R was mostly suspension/brake upgrades over the regular 93 Cobra, plus a rear seat delete, no A/C, etc. 499 were made.

    - The 95 R added a 351W to replace the GT40-headed 302, in addition to suspension/brake/interior mods. 250 were produced.

    - The 00 R added a 5.4 4V in place of the 4.6 4V in the regular Cobra, along with other mods similar to the previous R models. 300 were built.

There is no factory Cobra or Lightning that was rated at 485 HP.

    Cobra:
    93 = 225
    94/95 = 245
    96-98 = 305
    99/01 = 320
    03/04 = 390

    Lightning:
    93-95 = 240
    99-00 = 360
    01-04 = 380

I know the specs and history on the Cobra R, and I know that the 2000 Cobra R was not disigned only to compete with the C5. My reference to Ford answering the C5 with the Cobra R was due to Ford's statement that they "had finally beaten the Corvette" when the 2000 Cobra R was released. Sorry for the lack of clarity in my statement.

I never heard such a statement. If you could please post a link to the quote, I'd like to read it.

Ok, I was refering to an article published in Road & Track magazine when the 2001 Corvette Z06 was introduced. The basic statement made by the writer was that Ford always wanted a piece of the Corvette, so they built a lighter, more powerful Cobra called the R with 385 horsepower and proclaimed victory at last over the Corvette. Then GM equipped a slightly lighter version of the Corvette hardtop with 385 horsepower as well, but due to the lighter weight vs the Cobra R, Chevy's sports car reclaimed the lead over the Cobra R. However, I have had no luck finding the article online and I no longer own the hard copy, so we're SOL unless somebody else can find it.

    I'm pretty sure we're SOL.

Most of the "built to compete with the C5 Corvette" stuff was internet hearsay (imagine that) which was eventually accepted as fact. John Coletti did say he'd like to have a comparison test run with that Vette (and it did match up nicely in objective performance numbers), but that's far from being the reason it was built.

...so they built a lighter, more powerful Cobra called the R...
FYI...the 2000 Cobra R was quite a bit heavier than the standard 99 or 01 Cobra:

    99/01 Cobra = ~3450 lbs
    00 Cobra R = ~3590 lbs

Oh yeah, I forgot about the weight of the 5.4. Engines being equal, the R is a lighter car (no backseat, etc) but I forgot that they threw an iron block in there. Good catch! Regardless, the 2000 Cobra R had a better power to weight ratio for sure. And some awesome resale value. The last one I saw for sale (keep in mind that was a year ago) went for the same as new, +/-$50k. Crazy. But that's the benefit of buying such a rare car.

The tranny in the R was also measurably heavier (T56 vs T45/365), as were the brakes, and it had extra bracing. On the other side, it had no back seat, radio, sound deadner, etc. It certainly did have a better power-to-weight (by a significant margin).

That was the first mod-motored factory Mustang to gain my respect. I wouldn't mind taking one of those things for a spin
