beat an sti from a dig!!!

short story really i caught a light with an sti i look over and look back to the light. i roll into the gas not wanting to spin and i was expecting to have to play catch up. to my suprise i didnt i dont know if he screwed up his launch or if he didnt want to drop the clutch from 5 grand but he didnt have a great start so i rolled into the gas and took off. since he had lost his biggest advantage he lost the race by about 1 1/2 - 2 cars to 90 where i shut it down. even though he didnt get the best launch i im still proud. but i guess sti's really dont have all that much up top.

my car is a 93 z28 a4 hooker catback, qtp cutout, k&n cai, vortec elbow, high flow cat, tb bypass, tb airfoil, rk sport ss hood

If he was within 2 cars at 90mph, he was definitely getting on it.

He might not have known at the beginning of the race though.

So the STI had to play catch up for a change

So whether the STI got a bad launch, or by the time the he realized it was on, the LT1 had already passed through the STI sweet spot.

    Good Kill either way.

yeah those cars are great off the line, but they have to be willing to beat up your car alittle in the process. Their cars can take it, but something about dropping the clutch at 5k is alittle scary to me. Doesn't seem like the clutch would last too long.

    Nice kill.

    Depends on who you ask.

Ask some people on this site, and they will call STI garbage, and show it no respect for a great performing car. They are usually the people who think anything other than 8 cylinders isn't a contender, and shouldn't even be considered in the same category. Those people you just smile at and move on.

Ask some STI worshipers, and they will say nothing can touch them. They are equally as annoying as the first group of folks.

Ask most people (the category I fall in) -- the LS1 has a edge in the quarter mile, and from a roll/ top end. But it isn't a "take for granite/ easy kill" ...So Bring your A game and you should be alright-- assuming stock/ vs stock.

awd is great from a dig so it gives them a slight advantage. But that advantage can easily be overcome with DRs on our cars.

i wouldnt say "easily" overcome. you still have to launch the thing, drag radials can still be tough to get to hook right sometimes.

lol the key word in your response is "sometimes" you have to admit most of the time when conditions permit they hook just fine. I know what your saying tho.

LT1 has more torque then an LS1 so it wouldnt surprise me if an STI has a better launch then the LS1 then then LT1 beats the STI from a launch or am I just stoned?

pretty much, anything above ~15mph and the LS1 > LT1

i really appreciate that dyno sheet. i had a feeling that was true but i never had proof cuz my friends 94 z28 with bald tires outlaunches me (and yes i know how to drive) it seems like my car launches like shit... it just seems to take a few seconds to get power, almost like turbo lag lol

Let me explain this in terms of reality, not magazine numbers, which suggest that both cars are close in terms of acceleration.

Stock for stock, the LS1 has a 70WHP advantage over the STI, and hugely better power and torque curves. When riding in either car, you can feel the difference immediately, the STi feels positively slow compared to an M6 LS1. So if the STI doesn't launch at 6,000RPM or if its a roll race, its not even a comparison. We're talking multiple car lenghts and still pulling.

From a dig, the STI can keep up if its launched at redline. That gives it a huge jump, and by the time the LS1 goes flying past, its right around 1/4 mile. Thats why their 1/4 mile times are close. However, if you look at trap speed, its about a 5-6MPH difference, which is huge in terms of actual acceleration.

The STI gains all its acceleration on the launch. Once you're moving, the car isn't fast. This is apparent in its 5-60MPH time of around 6.5 seconds, without the launch its slow. LS1 is only a couple tenths off its 0-60 time in the 5-60 test, because you dont need to launch it like an asshole, and its got a fat torque curve so its doesn't fall off the power at lower RPM's in 1st gear. You hit the throttle and it goes, no turbo lag, no bogging, no bullshit.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather not fry my clutch and risk grenading my entire drivetrain to run 13's.

Hope that helps explain the differences.
