    2002 SS vs 2010 SS

was out on a cruise with my buddy yesterday and when we jumped on I94 eastbound to head uptown from downtown i had seen a 2010 SS a couple of car lengths a head of me. i casually caught up to him and as i got closer i had seen that it was a older gentleman with shirt and tie on. I had yet to race a new SS and really wanted to; to see where my car stood. i had even planned on taking one on a testdrive that day. As the driver looks over i give him a thumbs up and point ahead at the open road. he nods and puts it down. i had it in third and we started from 65. i pulled a couple on him in third and then a few more lengths as i topped out fourth. I was surprised on how well i did but i think he was even more surprised by the look on his face as he cruised back up to me. he gave me a big thumbs up, nod of approval, and mouthed "WOW" at me as he went his seperate way.

    i skipped the test drive.

Just so we're clear on this (and I don't doubt you), this was the SS not the V6, correct? I've heard similar stories to this about the new SS's, and have been wanting to run one myself, but have yet to come across one.

i ran one in san diego a couple of months back at 80-130 a few times on the interstate and i can tell you it was a manual, and we were evenly matched. whoever got the jump stayed that way. def not a v6. from a dig would have been a different story im sure. one way or the other.

It was most likely a L99 auto which are dogs until you tune out Torque Management etc.

i have FRA, K&N, SLP lid, 8.5mm wires, ngk tr55's, ceramic coated longtubes headers, 3" ORY that bolts up to the stock 3" CME. My car is also tuned using hp tuners. And its a M6. It definatley was a Super Sport and it was mostly likely an auto.

Nice run. They are heavy and slow. GM dropped the ball except for the looks.

Ive driven the L99 and LS3 Camaro on several occasions to me its very noticable the power differences between the 2 cars. With a good tune the L99 wont be far off but i just cant get over the fact that its a heavy car. You can feel it no matter how you drive it, turns, braking and acceleration. My old M3 which weighed at 3781lbs felt really heavy when you accelerate from a stop but braking, handling and high speeds it felt extremely nimble. Then again that was a higher priced vehicle either way the new camaro still hasnt grown on me in the end its preference what one person likes another doesnt.

Certainly they are heavy. However, if they are also slow, then a comparable is LS1 F-body is more slower (so to speak).

LS3 is the 426 HP 6.2 found in all M6 SS Camaros. L99 is the 400 HP 6.2 found in all A6 SS Camaros.

The L99 has AFM, VTT, slightly smaller cams, and a bit less compression.

ls3's are also dynoing around 375+ rwhp, and the l99's are in the 315 area

why the two different engines,is the ls3 too much for a automatic to handle?

Yeah the LS3 model is indeed faster than the 4th gens. I should have specified that I was talking about the L99. I just think it could have been a lighter car. I know there is a lot of safety stuff that adds to the weight and all, but GM should have at least offered a no option one like they did with the 4th gens. The new mustang should make things interesting.

This is still their "first" run of the car. We've already heard the Z28 is gonna be BAD@$$ when it hits so who knows what's yet to come. I'm just glad they brought the Camaro back.
