08 COBALT SS TURBO VS. 99-04ISH stang GT

So my best friend just picked up a New cobalt ss turbo last saturday(its all stock). I must say it is a sweet little damn car. So today he picks me up and we go hit up the local luch- watering hole about an hour ago.

So on the way to get some beer and food this 40ish year old dude in a 99-04 style gt 5 speed is reving the shit out his car next to us at a red light (he had full exhaust from the way it sounded). I look a my buddy whom at this time has a smile from ear to ear and tell him to launch on his ass.

He turns on the launch control and puts the rpms to 5k for launch. The mustang spun like crazy of the line but my buddies SS dead hooked with the launch control by the time w got to third at about 80 we had 4 lengths on the guy. The guy got next to us at the next red light and yelled to me and my friend " whats that thing got in it". I simply replyed "its just a 4banger with a hair dryer!".

Lol, those cobalts and solstice fuel systems are crazy. Direct injection and they can support 350-400whp. You just need a bigger turbo, bolt ons and the right tune, injectors and pump are taken care of by GM. It also has brembo calipers on the front

    Nice kill.

Those new SS Turbos are quick cars.

They are running 14.0's, which is exactly what 99-04 Mustang GT 5 speed's run in stock form. Sounds like you got the launch pretty good, hence the 4 car lead. From a roll it would have been a pure HP race, which would have been interesting for sure.

Not really, they both make the same power, but the cobalt is 400lbs lighter. No race is a pure hp race unless both cars have the same gearing, weight and aerodynamics.

    Obviously you misunderstood.

Both cars run the same times in the 1/4 and trap about the same.

Therefore it should be a drivers race from a roll. Thats what I meant.

The SS traps 103-104mph, i thought the 99-04 stang gt was a 98-100mph trap speed car?

It is. I used to have one. NEVER trapped over 100 stock. Best time was 14.09@99MPH.

Which is why i would think a 08+ cobalt SS would pull one on a roll.

I test drove one. It was alright. I liked driving the new challenger better. Front wheel drive just doesn't do it for me.

Yea I tuned a local kids silver 08 ss with the Hahn racecraft tuner and he trapped 13.2 before the tracks closed for the winter, and that was with the stock turbo and a cat back!

It torque steers like a MF'er, but atleast gm put limited slip in them unlike the first few years of the srt-4's.

Wow.....that's very impressive. Too bad they missed the heyday by about 3-4 years IMHO...when the EVO/STi/SRT-4 debuted, there were TONS around....this car would have been a deal breaker for many of those buyers I would think.

Its still has a class against the speed 3 and SRT-4 caliber.

with the new fast and the furious movie out now I wouldnt doubt that you will see more of them on the street. The owner of the dealer where my buddy bought his says they can't keep these new SS's on the lot. They get one in and its usually gone within a few days.
