whining noise + heat spikes?
ok guys im having a couple issues that i really dont know what to do with. There's been a whining noise that keeps getting louder and louder from the engine, basically sounds like a supercharger lol and its definitely NOT. Wasn't too concerned until today, when i started it, it was MUCH louder than before and i've been getting random temp spikes with the engine. But about a month ago i had a new radiator and thermostat put in and its been running great till today. Any help or advice would be appreciated

Does the whine change with engine rpm? If so, it is an accessory mounted to the engine, or the belt. Use a mechanic's stethascope to help locate it. Could be alternator, power steering pump, etc etc.

possibly even the water pump

cool cool pretty much what i was thinking, as soon as the whining first started happening (and yea it gets louder with RPMS) i checked the belt out and i couldnt see any real damage to it. Was thinking water pump maybe like you said because of the heating problems. gotta just tear it apart i suppose and check everything out. Thx guys

If you're gonna tear it down, just spend the cash and replace it. Be damn careful not to soak the opti in water when you pull it off, it holds quite a bit behind it. There's no sense in taking off a part and not putting new on, especially when it takes that much to do so.

well swapped the new water pump today with new thermostat and temp sensor and cured the heating issue WOOT! but that damn whining is still goin on, only whines when the engine is cool tho, after running for a bit it goes away

Fire it up cold and put your head/ear as close as you can to the ps pump. I bet that's the culprit..

Mine was easy as pie.

the heat spikes are most likely steam pockets (that sticks out to me) as far as the whining - possibly the psp - but coolant is the lubricator for the pump - and steam pockets could screw up your new water pump. let us know what you find out. just my .02

Try turning the wheels left to right and see if the noise gets louder. If there is no change then start looking at the tensioner or a/c compressor.
