Switch to Syn Oil?
My Lt1 is at just under 100K and I want to switch to running synthetic oil. I would like to know the best way to switch over from conventional oil to a synthetic.
I have heard by starting with a half and half mix, but not sure how many changes or if I up the mix or start at 1/4. Input is appreciated.

just change it. expect some leaks with that many miles on it.

sometimes you will sometimes you won't , all depends on how you hold your mouth. (old saying my grandfather used when he was alive) the oil doesn't leak but the older gaskets might let the smaller molecule of oil out easier. oil leaks never killed anyone, within reason of course

Never heard that one before. I like it.

Synthetic oils will break down deposits, which may have been helping to seal up the motor. Thats where your potential leaks might come from. Just change it over and go. I wouldnt bother with running a percentage mix or anything.

I wanted to switch over to help with the longevity of my engine. Would it be better to just stick with conventional oil to not bother with leaking?

It might leak, it might not. Regardless, if it isnt leaking now, it's not like you're going to have a gigantic puddle under it if you switch to synthetic. Either dino, or synthetic, changed at appropriate intervals, will protect your engine... Synthetic though, is indeed better at everything. It will protect a bit better, maintain viscosity better, provide slightly more power and better fuel economy, and last alot longer than conventional oil. The cost argument is moot, because the synthetic doesnt need to be changed as often.

The best way is just do a conventional oil and filter run it for 50 miles then go straight to Mobil1 5w-30 Synthetic.. royal purple is great and all but for the price unless its a track car i would not waist my money, with reg mobil1 syn you can usualy go 5000 miles before you need to worry, this is unless you nonstop dog on your car. but no matter what I would never ever ever not use synthetic, syn does not burn like conventional oil because all the molecules are the same size, and with conventional there are up to 50 diff sizess and the smaller ones get burnt off first. just go out to your car look at it (the motor) and ask it what it wants.. trust me, it wants synthetic

My 93 T/A has 101k on it and I use dino oil, just change it every 3,000. I have a new 07 GT and I have Mobil 1 in it. I would not change over now with 100k on the clock.

Do you really think changing over to syn. oil at 100k is going to do much? Do you think the motor will last 20k miles more??? Change the oil every 3k with dino oil and you will be fine. If the prior owners ran syn. oil I would say it would be a good idea to continue with it. However, since that is probably not the case it seems like a waste of money. I can get 5 qrts of dino oil and a filter at Autozone for $12.99 and when I buy Mobil 1 for my GT is costs me about $40.

Thats special that its cheap. But a syn oil is better for a motor. Dino oil causes more wear and tear than a syn oil will. I changed mine over at 118k miles and it runs smoother for me. Maybe its because your synthetic oil is in a mustang and you cant feel the difference

The air is thin in Colorado so maybe that clouds your judgement.....I really doubt that you can tell that your car runs smoother because you're running syn oil.

Well let me see, it starts better, idles better, and runs smoother. Maybe because you own a mustang your judgement is clouded?

I don't think you will develop any leaks. My car has 98k on it.. and no leaks. I think I have even switched back and forth a few times. This is the first I ever heard of such a thing.
