    Need help troubleshooting a problem!

    Hey everyone!

I'm pretty new to the whole TA thing. I have a bunch of mustangs and a 300zx TT. My TA is my daily driver. It is an automatic. I only put exhaust on it because my ZTT is a money pit.

Anyhow, my problem is that it doesn't seem to be running quite right. There is a hesitation in power at the get go. Then power. Almost like the turbo lag in my 300.

When I hooked a computer up to it, I was given the codes, quad driver 1 and 2. If I read it right the manual basically says that Im going to need a new computer. The "check engine" light comes on periodically when I'm on the highway. Also, it sucks gas like there is no tomorrow. Getting maybe 10 to 11 mpg.

So is my car just really a turd on take off and gas guzzler or could it really be my computer? I really need to figure this out for myself. My husband is a jerk.

When is the last time it had a tune up? How many miles? Mods? Your best bet is when the check engine light comes on just drive it too Autozone and they will scan the codes for free and you can post them so we can define them and help you further. 10mpg is not normal unless maybe stop and go traffic and your driving the dog poo out of it. But even then its pushing it.

I did have autozone check it. Didn't give any codes, both times. My friend has a computer that gave us Quad Driver 1 & 2.

As for the car itself. Has the cold air intake and aftermarket cat back. Haven't removed the cats. The exhaust manifold has a small crack in it after I rebuilt the engine (don't know how I did that, lol). But nothing has changed. It acts the same way now that it did before I rebuilt it.

The car itself has 180xxx miles on it. The block, waterpump, radiator and all the gaskets are brand new. Plus new plugs, wires and other various stuff. This was all down about 4000 miles ago.

I really don't drive the dog poo out of it, unless its saturday night. I use it to get back and forth to work.

I only paid $2000 for it. It's been a good car other than the gas mileage.

she is probly trying to read it with an obd II scanner not knowing on 95 you need a obdI scaner with an obd II plug. Quad 1 & 2 is probly an error. my questions for you are have you checked the fuel pressure? checked plugs and wires? how old is the opti, i dont think it would be the opti but never hurts to ba able to eliminate it as a suspect. is the cat stock? is the maf clean? Basicly what have you done for trouble shooting. this info should help narrow it way down.

Well the plug and wires are brand new. I don't know what the "opti" is. Cat is stock (don't have emissions in OK, I want to remove it). My car doesnt have a MAF, unless it is just missing all together.

its a 94 it should have a maf. unless it has a 93 ecm and harness that would account for 1 of your codes and a decrease in milage. that would put it in speed density mode like 93 cars are. the opti is the p.i.t.a. lt-1 optispark distirbuter located behind the water pump. it is very sensitive to moisture. if it is stock it might be time for a new cap and rotor. i would take the cat out also if i were you its probly about done clogged up. that also would be killing your power and gas milage. and about the connector thats my bad obd1 scanner is fine i thought you had a 95 which requires an obd 1 scanner with a obd II connector. if you can get the codes again and let us know what you get.

Does it backfire or misfire? Check plugs and wires. Also check distributor. DO all the standard "tune up" things you can do. You buy it used you should do it anyways since you dont know what its been through(i do to all my cars). Check the book, they will have a list of things to check regularly

Please let us know what you are using to read the codes. You said that you hooked the computer up to it. Are you using a handheld, a cable with a software package on a laptop, or something different? We can provide better help if this information was included.
The first thing I would check would be the vacuum. It really sounds as if it has a vacuum leak, since you have rebuilt the engine and replaced so many "normal tuneup" parts already.

    1. Make sure you have good fuel pressure
    2. like said above check for a vacuum leak.
    3. Have it scanned for the right code. Do you have a laptop? You may be able to do it your self for the same price a shop will do it for, if not cheaper.
    4. Fix what ever the code is
    5. One of the most important, FIX the exhaust manifold leak. You are loosing your gas mileage because of it, better yet put some pacesetter long tubes on it.

I really dont know what type of computer was used. It was red box, long, it sat in his lap and he plugged it in under the steering wheel. He scanned my VIN number with it also.

I purchased some headers for it the other day. I'm also going to try and replace this OPTI thing. Ive already replaced the wires and plugs, might just replace them again.

Yes it pops and backfires, I thought it was because of the cracked manifold, but come to think of it, it did that since I bought it day 1. This car drives me insane.

    Hey guys:

Ok so I have changed the opti thing, the cap rotor wires plugs and my ECM.

After changing the ECM the car starting running extremely better not to mention the nice surprise with the JET Performance EPROM that was in my old ECM. So the last code I am getting is a 26. I read my manual and this thead and I am at a loss as how to make this code go away. I still have a little hesitation in power, almost like a little misfire.

What do I do about this code????

DTC 26 Evaporative emissions canister purge solenoid circuit:

EVAP solenoid probably has an electrical fault. Replace the EVAP solenoid.

It should be about $20 from a dealer replace it and the code should go away.

But would that eliminate that little bit of surge, misfire that I am experiencing?
