Grudge Match... Stang vrs LT-1... need insite
Ok guys, need some help here... I got a buddy (whos like my brother but we have a friendly rivalry thats been going on for years) He knows my LS-1 Could blow his ass all over the road and my LT-1 is about .500 faster than him in the quarter and this finnaly got to him i guess. Well long story short the LS-1 is gone and im gonna build the hell outta my LT-1... Heres the catch, he dosent know im about to build the LT-1 and hes currently building his stang to go way way faster than me this spring at the first test and tune... Heres where you guys come in... ill tell you step for step what hes doing and i need to know what i need to do to keep 1 step ahead of him.
His plan for this winter is to drop in a 5.4L F.I. (he says its a direct bolt but whatever) Paxton Novi 2000 Supercharger, Full exhaust, 4.10s, and a 6 speed out of a cobra....
My plan (im open to many changes though) Heads, Vortech S-Q Trim supercharger, Headers, Full Catback, No Cats, LT-4 Intake, and Delteq Ignition system... what do i need to do guys? Thanks in advance for the help... and if i can blow his ass outta the water by oh say a second... id be happy with that too lol

after that the next step would be weight reduction, sticky tires, and a good suspension setup

I'd say, stroker kit, forged internals, blower w/ aftercooler and more boost, built rear end, gears, suspension, heads, blower cam, and full bolt-ons. Then you'll have a serious contender that will stand up to almost anything on the street. But that's a lot of money. And spray it too if ya want.

if you gonna boost your LT1 you should build up the bottom end first.

i dont plan on running a ton of boost so i should be alright...im only thinking about mabey 10-12 psi at the most...just enough to put me where i want to be

Stock LT1's can only handle 5-6psi, up to 8psi intercooled. If you plan on going any more than that, you should forge the internals and build a bullet-proof bottom end.

ding ding ding we have a winner johnny, black is 100% correct. thats why i am putting over 3600 in my bottom end ,counting special block work to go to a splayed 4 bolt main cap (flat bottom) to hold over 500na with a 300 shot. it isnt cheap to build a motor correctly.

Glad to have confirmation on what I am talking about. Sometimes I wonder if I know anything at all. But investing in splayed 4 bolt mains is one of the greatest things you can do for an LT1. And with running boost, you should definately consider it.

I've never seen a block or crankshaft fail in a 2 bolt main LT1. That being said, there is some debate as to wether or not a splayed four bolt (converted two bolt block) is any stronger than a factory four bolt block.

You never even spoke about what kind of mustang hes building from...

There has to be a strength advantage of having more than 2 bolt mains, or why would GM have 6 on their LS1? (4 vertical, 2 cross)

see its not a factor of splayed being stronger than a factory 4 bolt . its a issue of having said block on hand or buying a new/used block to build with. to me, if you think about the amount of force being put on the crank (on a nitrous or blower motor) and then consider that a bolt that is striaght , is only being held in with the threads alone. with a splayed cap you are using the body of the bolt as well. it would actually have to break the bolt not just the threads themselves. well i am on some night time cold meds so i hope this made sense. time to pass out later gents

The webbing on a factory four bolt block has more material where the outer bolts go in, whereas a two bolt block has less, as there were no bolts there from the factory. I'll take a factory four bolt block with aftermarket caps any day thanks. Fact remains though, how many two blocks and cranks have you seen break because of two bolt mains...

only 2 of these are about cracks and cap issues. the rest are guys that build these high hp motors for a living and tell you wnat you need to do. i guess you build it right now or rebuild it later. cause once you make 427rwhp i guess 700 is the next step, well it is in my case. after that i guess when the bug bites again it will be a turbo setup, this is a never ending hobbie , so why build it half ass now and not go ahead and build for the future. now i am going back to sleep , i'm still sick and a guy is calling me about his car not cranking due to his opti or coil later gents

I can't say I would be too embarrassed if I got put down by a blown 5.4L Stang with 4.10's, bolt-ons, and a 6 speed. He's obviously putting in the money, maybe some wrench time too.
