    fuel problems

ok.....i have a 96 trans am it's been runnin fine for the last few months then all of a sudden it started backfiring on me yesterday. I just had put gas in it before it started doing it. It will idle for a few minutes then sputter and backfire before it just quits. Also after it does it smoke comes out of the air intake. Any help is appreciated thanks

a major timing problem. Its firing when the intake valves are open. A misfire is one thing but a backfire like that is crazy bad. All that is supposed to be set automatically by the ecm

well, yes if its really jacked up inside. But my car never backfired when mine went out.. but that doesnt mean much. If the rotor on the inside gets damaged from being worn out, then it the plastic could break and the metal conductor inside could get misaligned and then could cause it to fire at the wrong time.. and thus backfire. although mine was not that bad. have you ever replaced yours? and how many miles are on it?

Did it start doing this after you changed all those parts? Could be the firing order is wrong.
