    96 lt4 question

ok i know nothing really of lt4's other than i have read on here that they were in some vettes. a guy i used to work with has 96 ss camaro with a lt4 says it is rare car and it came stock with 400hp. so can anyone tell if his claim is true? and the differences between the lt1's and lt4's thanks in advance.

Here is a qoute from the f-body FAQ's

SS/LT4 - available only in 1997 with all of the standard and optional SS equipment, but the LT1 was replaced by a balanced and blueprinted LT4 engine with 330 HP. Additionally, they got a new stainless steel exhaust system and exhaust manifolds, and a new Bilstein performance suspension set-up. The cars had to be special ordered as 30th Anniversary cars with a 6-speed transmission, and no T-tops or convertible, and they were then sent to SLP for modification. Production was limited to 100 cars.

Tell that guy he's full of it! The only F-bodies to ever get the LT4 were the specially optioned 1997 Camaro SS and Firehawk - not '96. They came in the Corvette Base Coupe, Collectors Edition, and Grand Sport models in 1996, and were "under-rated" at 330hp, considering my '96 C4 LT4 Coupe made 308rwhp bone-stock.

They don't make the LT4 parts anymore. Well, GM doesn't anyways. So, they are hard to find. You'll probably have to buy the parts seperately to build one if you wanted. The LT4 conversion kit isn't available either. It consisted of the red LT4 intake manifold, LT4 heads, cam, gaskets, and valvetrain upgrades. I know Edlebrock is now making LT1 and LT4 'air-gap' intake manifolds now that you can buy. I don't know where to get LT4 heads though. You can't use LT1 heads because the ports won't match up with an LT4 manifold.

The debate is that you can get more gains out of other H/C parts for less money. Check out Lloyd Elliot's website. A lot of guys throw his stuff out there as quality parts.
Personally, I wouldn't look into LT4 parts, because there are so many more options out there.

thanks for all of the great info you guys really know your lt motors and some day my sons 94 z he bought a couple of months ago will take a turn for the worst. it has 130k on it now and he is really good with it and drives it very little but will start college this yr and will drive about 40 mi a day. im actually looking foward to rebuilding his motor after proper reseach it has been many yrs since i have had to take on such a chore and i want have all of my ducks in a row if you now what i mean. i will also have to do this with gas milage in mind. i have a stock firehawk and i can say that its a little faster but i enjoy his car because it already has 3.73's and one little blip of the throttle at a stop really compliments the torque of the lt1 so even though his car is 8 yrs older than mine i enjoy it just as much heck i might even buy it from him one day. so any info you guys have i would love to read and copy. so post up what you know.

The intake ports on the LT-4 heads are raised, that is why it uses a different intake manifold with the ports also raised.

LT4 heads are now available through Edelbrock to work with their LT4 manifold. So in a sense,,,yes you can build yourself an LT4 if you desire,,,,just that the parts are made by Edelbrock now.

Kudos to Edelbrock to step up to the plate and make parts for an engine that no one else cares to.

Yeah, I just saw an ad for those the other day. But I posted that before those heads were released. But you will still need the LT4 hotcam and valvetrain.

Ya the hotcam and valvetrain are easy to obtain. If it were me and building this engine from scratch I would probably deviate from the LT4 theme a little bit and go with a little more camshaft maybe. Probably a custom grind and a different valve train setup

Hey I got a LT4 in my 96 TransAm but motor came out of a 96 vette. The only thing the motor did not have was the intake so I put my stock intake off of my LT1. Could this be holding back full performance of the LT4. Also never got my computer tuned. But it still will run circles around the LT1 that was in my car before swapping motors.

The LT1 intake will hold you back a bit. Pick up an LT4 if you can. And a custom tune will bring out some power too, maybe 20rwhp. SLP used the stock LT1 pcm in the limited edition 97 LT4 cars they made, so you can do it without hurting anything, but there's power left on the table.

The lt4 has a bigger intake , bigger ports and valves. it maded about 310hp. But with a GM hotcam 218 / 228 DUR. 550" and mid sized haeders it could make about 400 hp.

The LT4 was factory rated at 330hp, and made every bit of it.
