    94 camaro no spark

    hello,
I have a 94 lt1 camaro...the other day my dad was driving it and it died and wouldnt start....then after a few hours it started back up and he drove it home, yesterday I put a new MSD coil on, tried to start it and it wasnt getting any fire at all.....it now has a new optispark and coil so I pretty sure I can rule that out, I believe the problem might be the Ignition Control Module.... does any one have any other suggestions before I buy a new Ignition Control Module?

Does the engine turn over and not start? Or does it not turn over at all?

thanks for replying......thats what I was thinking.... I guess I'll buy a new one, I'm torn between a new Standard ICM or upgrading to a MSD 6AL. Do you know if the wiring involved is fairly simple?

I'm not familiar with the wiring on the MSDs to the LT1, but you could call someplace like Summit Racing and ask one of their techs. They're pretty knowledgable about that stuff.

is your optispark a gm optispark? or is it aftermarket like msd or summit?...i read somewhere on here that the aftermarket ones sometimes go out not long after you install em

Unless you upgraded the opti or cap/rotor to something that could handle the extra spark I wouldnt go with the msd box.

one more thing.... I conducted a test I thought would rule out the Opti-spark, I tried to see if the coil was creating a spark by putting a screw driver in the Optispark boot on the coil-to-optispark plug wire and grounding it to get an arc.....nothing happened....that should rule out opti-spark right??

Update.....I bought a new ICM and I'm still having the same problem....I still dont think its the optispark b/c its not getting spark to the coil when it does this.... could it be the crankshaft sensor has gone bad??? any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok your not understanding how it all works. First off you have to have something that tells the ignition modual to fire the coil. That would be the optical sensor in the opti. A cheap item to check is the opti harness. This little harness can get fried from years of service next to the block. If it is ok and you not getting any signal from the opti, Guess what it's the opti.

By the way the crank sensor is not a part of making the ingnition system fire. Its only purpose is for missfires. It can be tuned out and not cause a problem other than nothing to measure missfires.

I've had a similar problem on my 96 caprice. Turned out to be a broken wire to the icm. To rule out the opti check to see if the injectors pulsate by using a test light or noid light. If that tests ok. Check the connector at the icm. Test terminal a and d for battery voltage. Check terminal c for ground. U can also use a meter to test terminal b for voltage while cranking. Should be a changing voltage somewhere around 2.6 volts I tested on mine. You can also use an led test light and watch for a steady pulsating No more than 4.5 should be present using the meter. If it all tests fine then it's the icm. If something tests out wrong let me know. I'll help you out.
