    Question Yellow Light

Today the service engine soon light came on and stayed on. I took it to the dealer where I bought the car last week. They messed with the gas cap, then danced around in circles for awhile. Tech came out and checked it. He said they would have to do a diagnostic check. So I am taking it back in the morning. The car has 86250 miles and it and runs great, no smoking or stalling. Is there a common problem with this light ? They said it would be no charge. Opinions anyone??

If the gas cap isn't sealed correctly the light will come on, I always turn mine about 3 times.
Otherwise 9 times out of 10 the light comes on because of an emissions system failure. EGR (if Equipped) AIR System (usually check valves) EVAP System (Gas Cap) are some of the culprits.
The Service Dept. will be able to find out whats wrong when they do the diagnostic

Was it a GM dealership? Can't believe they didn't just read the code - only takes a couple seconds, unless they suspect something else going on. If you don't have a scanner I'd bring it to autozone tonight and have them read the code (and not delete it) and see if they tell you the same code(s).

Yeah fine to drive it as long as it isn't flashing on and off. Guess they were busy.

+1 Yes, fine to drive unless you notice a problem or like 2001 said, if it is flashing (which indicates it is misfiring), then don't drive it unless on the way to get it repaired.

It all depends on what the SES light is trying to tell you.....

You may be fine for 100k+ miles... or your car may blow up in 5miles.

My dad had it come on in his TA. Turns out he had a pin sized hole in one of his hoses. He could have kept driving it and he would have been fine.

The check gauges on my truck has been on for a while .... then flashes on and off for a while... then turns off for a while.... then back on again... It's a vicious cycle.

I know it's misfiring... Has been for probally 30,000 miles. I know it's something to do with the 02 (might be a ground) just have not had the time to get it looked at and fixed. Tahoe has 240,000 and honestly runs like a champ if you ignore the light

Found my 02 T/A at a Chevy stealership, salesman said it had had aftermarket exhaust and some sort of computer system something or other, and the skip shift has been disabled. The SES light has been on since I got it, I asked the salesman WTF and he said the they checked the code and it was throwing some unknown code. I asked a friend who has a 00 T/A and he has the same problem, says his is O2 sensor or EGR or something I wasnt listening.

Maybe he wanted to keep it stock, and another reason is maybe the repair shop would not do an illegal thing like that. And also that way the shop can make more money, doing what it is supposed to do like repair cars and repair them for the reason the light comes on.
