This is a discussion on Winding Noise? within the Firebird / WS6 forums, part of the Vehicle Specific category; It sounds like it's coming from the engine. But iam not mechanically inclined haha....

My car whines a lot. Its the power steering. A lot of fbodies I have heard moving at low speed have noisy power steering. Turn your wheels back and forth, and then do it again with about 1500rpm and see if the whine increases with the engine being under load. I never heard mine whine after it was moving down the road past 3rd gear. I'm not too worried about it personally.

^^ A fluid swap can remedy the whine. I use a turkey baster to suck out as much fluid as I can from the reservoir then top it off with fresh fluid. With the front end off the ground, I then start the engine and slowly turn the wheels first to one lock and then to the next and back to center. Shut it down, and repeat this process a few times to remove as much of the old fluid as you can. Most recently did this on a Dodge Dakota with lots of miles and it was noise free when we finished.
