    2002 Firehawk

    What is your opinion?

I have a 2002 Firehawk, that I have kept pretty stock. I have noticed in the last couple of years that when I gentley slow down the car shudders. The steering wheel shakes side to side a little, it is just not pleasent. This would be at highway speeds. If I push moderatly hard on the brakes, the car doesn't seem to shudder, it just slows down.

Do you think that I "warped" the disks?

Probably just needs new pads and the rotors turned.
    $75 at most.

    Rotors...disks...same thing.

They call them "disk brakes" after all.

But yeah, sounds like warped disks or rotors or whatever you want to call them.

I am not sure how common warped rotors are on our cars, but I bought my car new in 2000 and I would take it to the dealer to get my oil changed. I know, pretty sad, but I decided to have all service work done at the dealership while the car was under warranty. Anyway, I took the car in around 12,000 miles for an oil change, and the service manager asked me if the car was shuddering any while I was driving it. I said maybe a little, but not really, and he said my rotors were warped and they would replace them while I was there getting my oil changed. It was like he already knew there was a problem with the rotors on new firebirds and TA's. I took it in another time for an oil change around 18,000 miles, and they told me there was some oil residue around one of the valve covers and that they were going to change my valve cover gaskets. I did not look at the engine a whole lot back then, as it was brand new, but I think I would have noticed oil around the valve covers. I thought whatever, change em, as long as it is free! And they did.

    Wink

    98T/Aformula, I use 78.08% Nitrogen, 20.95% Oxygen, 0.93% Argon, and 0.033% Carbon Dioxide...

I don't really think the type of air in my tires affects it much. I am driving on replacement Firehawk Wide Oval tires with the SLP recommended 30 PSI.

When I ordered the car in 2001, there were a lot of messages on various forums about warped rotors. I remember reading an article that suggested that the rotors are not warped so much as heat hardened in spots causing the vibrations due to the different coefficients of friction. I tried to prevent the spot heating by allowing the car to roll after a hard stop, but that isn't always possible. Any way that article and others suggested that the material that the stock f-body rotors were made out of was marginal at best.

So any way I have been thinking about replacing the rotors with aftermarket ones, but there are so many different brands out there I am not sure what to get. I want the rotors to last a long time but I also don't have a thousand dollars to spend. Even though it is probable pointless and useless, I do like the looks of the drilled and slotted rotors. I also like the idea of the zinc wash so they don't look completely rusty though the wheel spokes.
