    what gears ????

    I was wondering what gears come stock on a 98 Trans Am, automatic, is it like the vettes, C5's, were auto's come in either 2.73 standard or 3.15 performance axle, and 6 speeds have the 3.42's, I was under the impression that TA's came with 3.23 or someting like that, thanks for you help, Ozzie

    They came with 2.73 or 3.23. If you look at your rpo codes on the drivers door, the gear codes are I believe "AU". I think the code for 3.23 is AU4. If you do a search for "RPO codes on this forum you will find out all you need to know...

    Yeah, A4's came with either 2.73 (GU2) or 3.23 (GU5) performance axle option - M6's got 3.42 (GU6).

    And WS6/SS cars (and I'd imagine Hawks too) w/ A4 required the 3.23 rear as a "mandatory option".

    Thanks guys, I just looked and it has the stupid 2.73, helps explain why the best time I could get was 13.9

    Yup. My 98 ran a best of 13.65 @ 102.95. Only had a lid. Usually ran 13.9-14.1 near 100 MPH. Made a .3 difference when I manually shifted the car just before 6200. It had the 2.73 gear also.

    Do any of you know what it would cost, with install, parts and tune, to put in something like 3.42 gears, thanks Ozzie
