    Took 98 T/A to track - a little disappointed

I bought a 1998 Trans Am 3.23 A4 completely stock with 42k. I took it to Summit Racepark in Norwalk Ohio this past Wednesday and was only able to manage a 14.039@100.05mph. This was the best of 5 passes. Granted it was in the 90's with very high humidity. I had a mostly stock 93 T/A that ran 13.9s all day long. I was expecting mid-13s. Can the weather conditions have this much effect or am I way off? Also, between runs the car had trouble starting and would just barely stay running while showing about 500 rpm on the tach. I shut it off and restarted it and it was fine. This happened twice. Any ideas? I also don't believe all the fans are functioning correctly. It would go over 210 degrees if I let it sit and idle. I have been having trouble with some of the relays and think it might be the cause. Should I just replace all of them?

Weather can effect your cars performance greatly. But it sounds like your car is not running to its full potentiol. Maybe you need a full tune up?

Sounds like it could be a fule problem as well, get the pump checked and the filter changed it couldnt hurt...If it was a little cooler out you might be able to get .2 or so better, there are alot of factors that come into play when racing and you will find out that some days are good and some days are bad, trouble shoot what you think is wrong and go back and run it agin !

You also have to consider that the 98 have the worst of all years in knock sensors. They read everylitttle thing and kill timing. A good tune, and cooler weather will put you in the low 13's

Those gears that are in it aren't helping you get down that track that much either

90 degree plus very humid totally kills times.
you can easily lose 3-4 tenths from you best times because of that.

13.9 to 14.10 is what my 98 TA ran when it was stock, A4 2.73 gears. You mph is a little off where mine was at 101-102 mph. I'm in western Mi. very similar weather. With a full tuneup and injector cleaning you will most likely see a difference. Good luck.

Friend of mine had 2.73s in his bone stock Z28 and ran a 13.3 every time. Plus he had over 100,000 on the motor. So ya something definately isnt right

Thanks for all the replies. This forum should be very helpful as I go through the modifications I have planned. I found out the problem with getting hot and not starting correctly were the fan relays and fuel pump relay. There were a couple of stock looking LS1 Camaro's there running slower than me and a few stock looking newer Mustang GT's that were running high 14's and low 15's. I'm sure track temps were up there and my runs were in the hottest part of the day. Even still 14.0 is pretty slow. My first planned modifications are: TransGo shift kit, trans cooler, bolt-on SFC's, new airbox or lid, good catback exhaust (I just found out it has a Dynomax catback but I don't believe these are very high quality), and then it will start getting expensive... Do these sound like good modifications to start with?

Those are good mods to start on. You may want to consider weld on SFCs instead of bolt ons, That way you dont have to worry about the bolts loosening up.

Or you can do like me and weld your bolt-on SFC's. I'm going to tack weld the bolts so they can't back out and weld the mounts to the frame. Just an option
