sounds like the cars stock skip shift to me.....

Maybe you just shift different when the cars cold but unless you get the skip shift eliminator then the cars computer will force a skip shift to 4th. it's an annoyance to me so the skip shift kit was worth it.

That's what I did when I got the 98. Skip shift is a joke and it just didn't feel right.

the FIRST thing i did was the skip shift eliminator. Though when the weather is VERY cold out the car doesn't like 2nd gear for about 5 minutes. hoping it's no big deal since I do 99% of my driving in the warm weather also if i'm trying to be quiet i'll skip on my own.... though doing on my own is one thing. Having GM tell me i HAVE to do it is another thing entirely

Yup.. first thing I did when I bought the car was eliminate the skip shift.
Its quite ingenious of GM though, "artificially" boosts the MPG rating and sometimes gets out of gas guzzling taxes.

low throttle at speeds of around 15mph or so.. or something like that

it's a bit more involved than that. The coolant needs to be above a specific temperature before the skip shift will engage. also throttle position and RPM also play a role in the skip shift feature

I think its coolant above 170 degrees, less than 25% throttle, abd going between 10 and 20 or 25 mph.

so if its over 170 degrees could you get a 160 slp thermostat will it solve the problem? that would seem like a cheep fix and keeping the car cooler is a a++

I am pretty sure it is rpm related as well

There are 3 common ways to disable the Skip Shift. buy a plug in skip shift eliminator, do the skip shift resistor mod/trick, or have it tuned out of the PCM
