    1) The 1998 check gages light is for gages other than the fuel gage, I had a '98 TA.
    2) Like others say, don't run it below 1/4 consistently. I replace fuel pumps as part of my job, people who are always running low fuel run a hotter fuel pump and that burns them up!
    3) Replace your fuel filter every 25-30k, helps keep your fuel pump in good shape also.
    4) My check gages light comes on at a little less than 1/8 tank, it always scares the shit outta me because sometimes I am gettin' on it and suddenly that light comes on. I always think the worst and immediately look at my oil pressure first.
    5) I have never actually ran it empty, but carrying a gas can with a couple gallons would be a good way to find out.

So the "Check Gauges" light doesn't come on in a 1998 if you're about out of fuel?

But I ALWAYS keep at least 3/8 a tank in the T/A. Most of the time it is over a 1/2. It gets hard on the fuel pump when down that low, also allows the pump to pick up some sediment that may or may not be in the bottom of your tank.
Our fuel pump design eliminates the sediment issue though....MOST of the time.
X2! I have burnt up the fuel pump in my S10 and in my Grand Am GT by runing them low. I've learned my lesson now.

    +1

You never know when you might run into something unexpected. One time I was heading home after a day trip. Stopped for a burger, but the power was out for the entire area. An auto accident nearby knocked it out. IF I had been low on fuel, I would have been hosed. Can you say "Gas pumps need electricity"?

I personally never head out of town on a trip, even a day trip, with less than a full tank. Ya never know...........
