    +1

no need to argue over it.

to the OP, its all personal preference. because if you pick which tranny you want solely on everyones opinions on here you might as well go ahead and send me the money that you were going to use to purchase the f-body(since you are making your decision based on peoples opinions and suggestions on here). the bold text is my opinion, therefore send me the money.

Wow lots of angry people here. Suddenly we go from some stock vs. stock statements of fact to "some of the fastest A4s in the country are in Chicago." No doubt there are!

My statements of stock vs. stock, manuals are almost always quicker and get better gas MPG and trap higher ETs is based on reading Road and Track (they don't power shift), Motor Trend, Car and Driver, and more mags like that since the mid 80s. Like another person said, another reason for this is manuals usually have another gear before direct drive, keeping the engine in the powerband longer and the ODs can be taller. Not to mention better efficiencies for better MPG.

The OP wanted peoples opinions on 6-speed vs. AT, not arguments. If you want a drag car, get an AT for consistent ETs, mod that trans with a stall, shift kit and have mad fun, even on the street! If you are keeping your car nearly stock and mostly drive on the street, IMO manual trans cars are more involved and fun.

Sounds like the OP is going to mod the car with big power adders, if that happens he'll be needing to upgrade whatever trans he has and probably the differential as well.

GUYS,GUYS,GUYS,he's only asking for an opinion, not an arguement, some like auto, some like manual, you have to make your own choice for the right reasons.Figure out what you want the car to do and base your answer on that.I personally like to row my own gears, but maybe if i wanted to drag more often and be consistant i might have chosen an auto(not likely but my car see's daily road use in the summer).Anyways stop argueing at least we all drive f-bodys,auto or 6m.

    M6 or A-4?

One can select their gear manually if they choose to with the M-6. In some cases...better fuel economy by short shifting or skipping 2nd or 3rd. M-6 works great for bad driving conditions like heavy snow or ice. The 6 speed is a good tranny too...reliable.
The A-4 is easy to use in daily driver mode. Both are great.

I meant both cars racing each other, one auto and the other manual, modded a lot. What Iím saying is if both cars are modded a lot then the auto would PROBABLY have the advantage. Iím sure a stalled only auto could come close to a stock m6. And obviously if itís an all out drag car an auto would destroy a manual.

And yes Iíve been in a stalled automatic car, itís awesome for the first 60ft, and I know I could keep up with it easily with my car. Mainly because I have a variable stall from 800 rpm - 6,000. A converter does not give you more traction off the line so Iím not seeing how itís in any way faster for mild to medium modified street or track cars.

Ok....you are obviously lost. I never said that a stall would give you more traction off the line and Im not going to waste my time explaining how a stall converter works. Do a search....and I even think there is a sticky about it somewhere on this forum. Variable stall? Really? Nevermind....

My God How these threads get out of hand.
This is pointless only because everyone will end up being biased towards what ever trans they have. And none of the Info you guys have come up with is anything new then the crap we talked about 10 yrs ago. Also please don't quote Magazine Test numbers either cause unless your at the same elevation and the same Air temp then you can't compare one person's times to another anyway.
Line em up and run em stock for stock and even with experiencd drivers the outcome could be different everytime. Also contrary to popular belief M6's are not unbeatable from a roll either (Yes this is coming from an M6 owner).
Relying on the ECM to downshift under WOT is the reason most auto's lose roll races, an Experienced driver can manualy downshift the auto from a roll and still rely on the ECM for the upshifts (I've done it and it works) Remember I'm talking stock for stock when you add stall's in things change dramatically.
I won't add any of my stock for stock A4 vs M6 experiences only because I don't wish to add any more fuel to the fire of this thread. But I was Street Racing these cars when they were new (1998) and NO MODS were available so don't think for one moment that I don't know what I'm taling about.

I've owned my LS1 M6 for over 10 yrs Before that I had all Auto's `78 Z28 `79 Trans Am `94 Formula. I enjoyed them all equally but I would never go back to a Auto equipped Performance car now.

Just my Opinion and that's it.

    IMO drag racing=auto
    road racing=6speed

When I say road racing I mean at a track like Gingerman or Graton in MI or like the two nascar road courses. I think that the shifter is as important as the steering wheel on the road course. My drag car is a 3 speed auto and it shifts more consistant in the 1/4 mile than I personally could do with a manual. I like the road courses better than the 1/4
just because I love that type of driving. To each their own. Hope this helps. John
