Is the car modified any, such as an LS6 intake or long tube headers?

If yes, then its fairly common to have SES lights that haven't been turned off.

It could be bad or maybe something as simple as low power steering fluid.

Or Checkers/Schucks. First of all, make sure the gas cap is secured correctly. If that doesn't fix it, it's probably a cat, or something not really serious. But I would definitely find out first. Also, important for emissions testing since they often check dash lights too...but there are ways around that one (pull the ECM fuse).

I wouldn't worry to much about it. I would have it scanned and you may be able to use that as a bargaining chip to lower the price. I see these check engine lights as more of an irritation than anything. My 02' with 10k miles had a bad o2 sensor shortly after I bought it.
