    On the scales

I was able to get my hands on a set of electronic scales and thought it would be neat to drop the Trans Am on them to see what it actually weighs. The car is a 2002 Trans Am WS.6, equipped with an A4, and the only mods that would affect its weight are a set of 2 point bolt in UMI subframe connectors (maybe 35-40 lbs of additional weight) and a Magnaflow catback (P/N 16723) which has the dual outlets on each side (maybe 10 pounds more than stock). The car had 12.5 gallons of fuel in the tank.

I started out by raising the car and positioning the scales under each wheel:

After the scales were in position, I raised the car and leveled them both side to side and front to back. About a half-inch was needed under the right rear scale to level everything out:

Once the scales were leveled, I ran the wires to each scale, set the unit up and zeroed the scales:

Setting the car on the scales, I bounced the suspension a few times to ensure that everything settled. This yielded a total weight of 3,565 pounds. The weight on each wheel is as depicted:

By selecting the wheels, you can also check your front to rear bias, side to side and cross weights. Front bias is depicted by selecting the left front and right front wheels, this places an asterisk next to the selected wheel and the computation is set forth as a percentage. Therefore, the front bias was 55.7%:

Rear bias was 44.2% (missing 0.1% somehow):

Although not pictured, side to side the left was 49.3% and the right 50.7%. I then added myself to the equation by sitting in the driver seat and having my wife snap a picture of the screen:

This added 189 pounds to the total weight of the car and resulted in 104 pounds more on the back wheels.

Very interesting. It is amazing how many people think that all of the weight of the f-body is in the front.

My 1999 Z28 is at 3500 pounds without me and a full tank of gas. I weighed it the same way you did but was able to drive on the scales I used.

actually, that's pretty rad. Are you gonna figure out ways to get the car perfectly balanced? Battery/fuse relocate?

    Harsh man... harsh.

No plans to move any weight around. Just going to install the suspension mods and possibly upgrade the rear with 3.73's and something other than a 10 bolt. I simply wanted to know how the car scaled out so I have a baseline and it seemed like good info to post up for others.

    Back on the scales

The mods for this year now being complete (listed in sig), I dropped the T/A back on the scales this afternoon to see how much things changed. I figured I would lose weight up front after deleting the secondary air and swapping out the cast iron manifolds and cats for LT's and a catted Y. Out back, I knew I would gain with the addition of the tunnel mount torque arm, tubular suspension pieces and the 12 bolt. When originally scaled, I believe I had simply installed a lid and the Magnaflow catback.

The total weight went up 74 lbs. to 3,639 lbs -- original weight was 3,565 lbs. I may have just a bit more gas in the car than the first time it was scaled, but it is probably within about 1 gallon.

Where did the added weight go? There is now 1,670 lbs. on the rear tires as compared to 1,576 originally, so the rear is up by 94 lbs. In contrast, the front which originally scaled in at 1,989 lbs. is now down to 1,969 lbs. Therefore the front to rear weight basis has now changed to 54.1 / 45.8. Again, comparing this to the original shows that 1.6% of the total weight has moved to the rear wheels. (Note: One tenth percent is missing in the bias, same happened before.)

I was really hoping to be a bit lighter up front and did not anticipate the total amount gained with the mods. Next step is to get the drag wheels and tires bolted on and then scale the car one more time in its track attire. If anyone spots an error in my math, please let me know and I will edit.

    Interesting.

Kinda surprised at the weight of mine then....
With me at 200 pounds, it came in at 3780.
With iron block and 9" rear. Granted, no A/C and under 1/4 tank.

Do you remove anything from the car when you go to the track?

    Not really.
It is up subframe connectors, OEM placed suspension pieces, but on ProStars.

Spare and jack aren't in the car either.
